There are multiple reasons for this, but the biggest one is the limitations they put on building new and high-density housing. It's almost impossible to build large apartments in most Cali cities, which means you bring down the supply of housing. Bring down the supply of housing but keep the demand the same and BOOM, prices rise.
Throw in overregulation of business and burdensome occupational licensing and you can see why Californians are so fucking poor. If someone economically literate made their laws than California would be cheap as dirt and I'd be free to move there and try my hand at being a screenwriter, but as it stands California is being choked to death by progressives who don't understand the concept of unintended consequences. How do we control where people decide to live? Theres like 100 years of complex social movements that lead to urban black populations being so high. Apartment for 2 (OK neighborhood, outside of busiest parts of city, on a budget, not cramped): $600 Month's food (on a budget, but not strict one): $200 each, 400 total Starting wages: $13 at Aldi (plus benifits). That's 4160/mo before taxes between you and your fashy boy toy.
There you go, you and Hitler Youth are gonna be taking home about $3500 a month after taxes. $2500 after food and rent, and we can throw $500 into insurance, phones, utilities (most are covered free around here), etc. Now you and your Ćbermensch can put $1000/mo into your rainy day funds till they get to be about 6-8k, $500 into an investment portfolio for retirement, and $500 in fun money a month between the two of you (THATS ENOUGH FOR A NINTENDO SWITCH š±š±š±).
For moving, I would consider getting a loan and selling off everything you don't need. Start applying to jobs in the area you move to in advance and start looking for apartments to move to, living in Air BnBs or other temp housing until you do. If you need to save money for the trip even after getting loans do some Uber driving and sell blood plasma (although you may not be able to sell blood plasma as you're biologically male and having sex with another biological male which increases the risk of HIV transmission, they probably would tell you no but your Pepe boy can sell his plasma). You're trans, find trans activist communities in the area and email to them to explain your situation and you're looking for temporary cheap/free housing until you get your first job and paycheck.

All things considered, California SHOULD be the cheapest place in the US to live. They have the best geography in the US (on the coast which lowers transport costs for goods, good agricultural sector for competitive food prices, industries like Hollywood that aren't very elastic and can be taxed disproportionately, etc.) and they have a lot of things that bring in high wage earners (which means a high tax pool). Living in LA shouldn't cost much more than St. Louis or Charlotte. The problem is that California has destroyed their own economy which is why they have the highest poverty rating in the US (when you factor in the cost of living, Census Beauro Supplemental Poverty Index) as well as the third-highest income inequality in the US. There are multiple reasons for this, but the biggest one is the limitations they put on building new and high-density housing. It's almost impossible to build large apartments in most Cali cities, which means you bring down the supply of housing. Bring down the supply of housing but keep the demand the same and BOOM, prices rise.
Throw in overregulation of business and burdensome occupational licensing and you can see why Californians are so fucking poor. If someone economically literate made their laws than California would be cheap as dirt and I'd be free to move there and try my hand at being a screenwriter, but as it stands California is being choked to death by progressives who don't understand the concept of unintended consequences. Fortunately, the state is hemorrhaging people and business is starting to flee, so if we are lucky California will soon be bled to fucking death by progressive politics and someone can take over who understands that prosperity is built on open markets with a healthy welfare state.
