[Business] Orangetheory Fitness is unironically a brilliant business model and most don't seem to realize it

1  2019-11-07 by MasterLawlz

I started doing the classes this year and the more I learned about the company, the more I was impressed with whoever made it. It must be making money hand over fist because the cost of classes is a lot higher than most gym memberships (unlimited classes is $159 per month where I live) but the overhead cost of actually operating the gyms is probably pennies compared to the massive gyms people normally go to. They're all small enough to fit in strip malls so you could theoretically put them anywhere. In fact, I don't know if they even have freestanding locations.

But what I realized when actually going is that they really perfected marketing fitness in the modern world to uneducated people. That sounds insulting but I really don't know how else to say it. It's very much geared towards the facebook boss babes that don't know how to work out and feel the need to share every time they go to the gym in their latest status. They even made up their own thing called splat points (which is minutes spent in a time of extreme exertion during the workout) that is 100% BS but sounds way trendier and would probably get you more likes than saying "I burned 436 calories and increased my incline by 1%". They still include all those stats for the normal people that actually know which numbers matter. It sounds stupid to me but I can't fault them for it in the slightest because cheesy shit like that is how you gotta market yourself in the modern world.

But the workout is genuinely good. It's only an hour and if you know how to push yourself then you will make good progress. It honestly feels like the people who made it legitimately knew a lot about fitness but realized that lazy fucks won't actually do anything unless you basically trick them into doing it with cheesy/trendy shit. I hung out with a couple of the coaches at a meetup thing one time and they told me it's literally in their job description to post on facebook nonstop. They even have to promote a different hashtag every month and it's always some kind of charity. The coaches are all pretty chill people, for as much as they have to post on facebook they haven't actually pressured me to be in any of the pics or anything which I appreciate.

But even ignoring all the actual fitness stuff, the business itself is pretty genius. They basically took all the main criticisms people have with other gyms and went against it (contracts, pushy salespeople, trainers that may or may not know what they are doing, an overabundance of equipment options that your layman might find intimidating). I sorta like that the exercises are all written at the corporate level so that random trainers can't go rogue and make up their own shit on the fly.

This is a super random tangent but it's something that I was thinking about lately and I'm really surprised that you don't see more about the company in Forbes or other magazines like that. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it eventually becomes one of, if not the most profitable gym chain in the country.

I started doing classes this year

doubt

I did tho, I go four times per week

Proud of u buddy 😋

good for you then

Stop

no

Listen here little baby. You're gonna get a lot of hurtful and degrading comments, but that ain't what I'm about. Let me just say, you are perfect the way you are. You hear me sugar? PERFECT. Don't ever change. You deserve anything and everything you want. Stay safe for me, baby girl.

>mfw thinking of you hurting

So wholesome 🤗

How much weight have you lost? Idk how you measure success with your goals. I'm just a typical gym rat with weights

80 pounds

Holy shit, good job

Thanks, I’ll lose another 20 to get down to 150 and probably stop then. I’ll keep working out though so that the muscle to fat ratio keeps changing for the better

Don't forget to dox yourself again when you're done, we all want to see how Max is doing.

150 seems pretty low, though i'm assuming you're not exactly a lanklet lol

I’m roughly 5’7” so I think it’s a good weight for me based on what I’ve read online

I’m roughly 5’7”

when. will. they. learn.

MonsterLawlz over here.

where is your r/loseit photo lawlz?

That's like a whole Ben 10

Poast physique

Welcome to being marketed to lawlz, you should probably maximize your leverage and personal risk tolerance by taking out a loan and investing yourself. Seriously, if there's one thing I know walking around America, it's that fitness is something everyone's buying.

I dunno man. New Pokemon game is coming out for the Nintendo switch if you really want cardio just catch pokemon while kicking your legs now and then in the tub.

It costs like 500k to run one of them I think lol. Would be awesome but difficult I imagine.

Just run some boomer gym lmao. All you really need to do is get seed money to buy gym equipment and rental costs. After that just make it a pretty website, market on facebook then get enough people buying your $30/mo subscription to make the money back

Good for you man! The next step is diet.

How much can I pay you to advertise my business? The Lawlz bump is real.

But the workout is genuinely good. It's only an hour and if you know how to push yourself then you will make good progress.

Lawlz, post before/after photos on r/nakedprogress.

Progress pics are done to death. What I wish I had thought of a year and a half ago was a time-lapse video. That hasn't really been by hardly anyone. But it's too late now.

I think they just wanted to see your dick.

🍆💦😋

I feel objectified

I think Masterlawlz wanted to see his dick.

im sure if you did that we'd all mistake it for a still image

rude

Lol wtf why does that sub exist?

It is kinda cool to see drastic changes in the human body. Like I’m sure a lot of people just go there to masturbate but I think it’s interesting in a non sexual way too

Ask me about never doing a single deadlift and eating pizza at lifetime - An essay about giving up on all your dreams.

honestly if you keep working out you might finally get some pussy.

You think I need to work hard to attract women? Are you forgetting that I'm already an /r/drama moderator?

whoa there muscles. working out for a month and your already chadded up

Gravy isn’t working out 🧐

huh

unironically going to workout classes and doing gay zumba shit

Just do starting strength and GOMAD lol stupid fatty

It's not like zumba lol, there's a lot of dumbbell and rower exercises. Their marketing would sorta make you think it was zumba though

Is Lawlz trying to recruit me into a pyramid scheme?

yes

$159/month

This is borderline robbery, I thought my $55 a month 24hr gym was outrageous. Why would you do this?

Because it's guided classes with trainers. If you do it a lot then it averages to being less than $10 per class

How do you afford it on your mod salary?

I refurbish body pillows as a side hustle

Iowa has a franchise like that called Farrell's and it 100% works. The big drawback for me is that it that the intensity is unsustainable. Running a household it sucks about an hour to 2 hours a day I don't really have.

That's probably a good place to pick up foids, that's the sort of gym that they flock to

not really, most women that ago there are middle-aged and out of shape. The only ones that look like they're in really good condition are the trainers

This is one of those things where I saw an ad for it, went "huh looks interesting," saw a bunch of retarded marketing buzzwords and threw it out lmao

I honestly can't blame you. All I can say is ignore the marketing just cause that's how they gotta make their money.

I just looked at it again and it still looks retarded tbh

I like it, it’s pretty fun

I just remembered my work will pay for it so... maybe lmao

Wait, really?? It’s definitely worth trying then because that will save you a good chunk of change. Only problem is a lot of the classes are booked so I always work out late at night because hardly anyone goes then.

I'd definitely have to have a morning class tbh. Fasted cardio or GTFO.

Which is the one where they make it a cult for "spiritual" mayofoid retards in their 20s-30s? That's where the real money is. When you got them thinking that they gotta pay you to keep their auras in shape, that's when they'll really fork over the cash.

I went for 9 months. Most of the instructors sucked but we had one great one and only went to his classes. He also put gangsta ass music which it pretty fun. Expensive though.

YMMV

I think I’m lucky because most coaches at my location are good but I had one from another location sub one time and she was terrible honestly. She was like six months pregnant and forgot half the instructions lmao

Put that Prego on the rower

Don't even try to kinkshame me. My kinks are my business.

It was a natural progression, but they were smart about it for sure.

Bruh moment

or as much as they have to post on facebook they haven't actually pressured me to be in any of the pics or anything which I appreciate

you should considering how it turned out last time.

lol

Most of what you say describes literally every other gym out there, except maybe a couple of special cases. Have you ever been to another gym?
