It severely impacts any future dealings with Turkey should we every try and improve relationships with them. It's not something that can really be walked back without looking super weak. Plus, if you're looking at it from Turkey's point of view it could also be seen as a signal just how far down on the shit list you've fallen.
So it's a signal, which is precisely my point. Took burgers long enough, anyway. Everyone else anywhere near Turkey that matters recognised it ages ago.
Sure, but it's usually about shit that actually demonstrates some intent. In this case, all it shows is that Turks aren't held in high regard anymore, which they clearly already knew - sanctions kind of demonstrated that already. What does this signal actually change? What new thing does it show?
It has much more to do with the change in precedent. Like you said earlier, everyone knows what happened. The US has officially kept its mouth shut on this for decades, the implication being that it would overlook Turkey's past indiscretion for its cooperation with NATO and not being completely hostile with Greece. Finally acknowledging this is basically a giant red flag from the US government that the relationship that has existed for the better part of a century is on its last legs.
To be fair, Congress voted to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide back in 2019, so this event on its own isn't as individually important as the overall progression of recognition as a whole.
that the US doesn't consider it beneficial to maintain a strong positive relationship with Turkey anymore. It's a big power move and probably has implications for the conflict in Syria and NATO.
No, Turkey has not been supporting Assad. They're in opposition to the Kurds primarily, Iran secondarily, and finally ISIS. They've been making overtures toward Russia but also supporting Azerbaijan against Armenia (who is under Russia's security umbrella) because Turkey is feeling out its options as an independent regional power. The reality is that the Russians don't matter nearly as much as they did during the Cold War, and thus Turkey and its control over the Bosporus isn't nearly as important to NATO anymore. It's pretty damn complicated, actually.
Honestly like this was a very well written and informative response, I haven't vetted it but for them little knowledge I have I can see how they are feeling things out. Thanks homie.
I've tried to capture the very broad strokes but to be honest, I haven't followed it nearly as closely as some. You could probably find better among some of the good SyrianCivilWar users, although you'll have to find them among all the trolls and idiots.
And not a distant descendant of Armenians (like those Americans that say "I'm Polish/Irish/X" because their great grandfather's was from there). She's so Armenian that she didn't speak English as a kid.
Imagine being an actual Armenian and deciding to join something literally called "The Young Turks" with a roach 🙈. She really must've assimilated to the American culture by putting money before anything else.
Good, first we sail through Indian Ocean to piss off the Indians, now we are remembering the existence of Armenians to piss off the Turks. Something not even DDR had the balls to do.
The Indians, like the Philipinos Japanese South Koreans and Taiwanese are very happy to see a major American military presence in the region given the pressure China has been applying to all of them
Turkey has their own reasons to be wary of Russia, they’re not going to cozy up to Putin over this. They’d much rather establish themselves as an independent regional power, not reliant on China, Russia or the United States, than continue to suck up to anyone.

This is unironically huge.

How? It's purely performatory. Turkey is currently not in the good graces, so Armenians can be thrown a bone. It doesn't actually change anything.

Bruv, a majority of international relations is signaling. Just because it's a signal doesn't mean it isn't significant.

Do you honestly think Biden cares about the US looking weak? 🤣

It makes the us look like they're confident enough in NATO's security that they don't need to pander to the turks to keep them happy
3 employee10038080 2021-04-24
Biden's the one that called it a genocide, why would he be walking that back?
5 strallweat 2021-04-24
True. He limits his walking ever since the stairs incident.

I think the narrative has been Turkey has curbed the flow of migrants but has also started supporting Bashir?
