Oh I'm sure what they replace it with will be sooooo much better and 100% not broken on arrival and for years to come!

What, you don't think a handful of lazy alcoholics can design a better method of web styling than the W3C?

You'd be hard pressed to find a group of programmers of any significant size that aren't alcoholics tbh.

Source: currently drinking

i met lots of alcoholic programmers when i first entered the world of programming, but since then it's mostly been reefer addicts

That is also the case.

Source: currently smoking

it's still 4/20 somewhere probably

I'm actually a bit pissed off by this tbh.

They're gonna fuck up the search engine again, I just know it.

"Major Site Redesign" this is the precursor wave of destruction.

Remember when Digg had a "Major Site Redesign" and then we all ended up here?

Is there any alternative to Reddit though?

Life.

pls no

For about 90% of the userbase, life is even more depressing than reddit.

user reports:

Nice try, mom.

I'm not interested in stalking teenagers though.

Bruh you don't have to read the recruiting board. I know I don't.

Then what's the point?

laughing at trailer trash from livingston parish that literally goes to the public library to post (I wish I was making this up)

LSU has the most entertaining fan base in college football

This but actually true

I do need more coach O in my life

Is there any alternative to Reddit though?

The way many Reddit users see Voat now is the way that a lot of Digg users looked at Reddit...

Full of retards and paedophiles?

Hmmm Digg was right.

*hebephiles

*mayophiles

So r/drama 2.0?

Raddit

I know of a few reddit alternatives from my search a few months ago. Here's a short list:

  1. Snapzu - Great design mixed with what seems to be a friendly and mature community. Really good content on a regular basis.

  2. Aether - Self proclaimed "anonymous reddit without servers." Access required a download so I didn't go any further.

  3. Hubski - Shares are used instead of voting to make things popular. I don't like how their front page shows month old things though.

  4. Empeopled - Gives more voting power to experienced users, although I'm not sure if that's a good idea after what happened at Digg.

  5. Hacker News - Lots of programming talk and tech talk. Hosted by a tech incubator so it makes sense about the content.

hackernews circlejerks harder than reddit, hubski sucks dick, can't speak for the others.

except snapzu, that name is fucking dumb. probably not any dumber than 'reddit' though

you serious think snapzu is a dumber name than fucking empeopled?

yeah fair enough they're equally dumb

aether is OK i guess

The "a" makes it seem like they're trying too hard

a little yeah

hacker news delivers good content to make fun of on reddit

down with systemd[isease]!

Hubski

Holy shit, that's a blast from the past. Wasn't it supposed to be The Reddit Killer like four or five years ago?

Tried it for a weekend. It sucked.

I remember this thread. After Saydrah and PiMA and a few others were baleeted.

Snapzu

Mature Community

I don't want a mature community. I want mean-spirited meta drama and /r/teleshits

I tried Aether a few years ago. The software's interface is nice, but it relies on a downloaded database, which took a long time intially and after a while stopped downloading. (the program is in general quite slow, also)

Despite the software's growing pains, I'd be all for it if the community on it at the time I tried weren't absolutely against features that allowed people running the software to control what their computer stores and hosts, or that allows them to stop them seeing certain users.

I wouldn't want to use it if it were even just half the size of Voat, because inevitably there would be child porn and malware in the database, or some other unforeseen abuse of it (like Usenet backups) I don't want the risks from my computer hosting those things.

Anyone got an invite to snapzu they can send me?

Neat, will investigate

Imzy

myspace FTW

Amino seems to be getting more popular.

Remember when Digg had a "Major Site Redesign"

If you're old enough to remember Digg you seriously need to kys

Pretty sure he is. He's a proper old timer. Look at some 5 year old meta threads. Pretty much the only person in there who's still posting will be /u/wwyzzerdd.

I would like to point out that there are other OG's still around. But they bitched out and made alts. I'm looking at you /u/Joan_Wayne_Gacy

Hey I got doxxed. Lol I can't be doxxed anymore buuut I like this edgelord username

also "Remember when Digg had a "Major Site Redesign" and then we all ended up here?" the ORIGINAL GANSTERS were here complaining about digg before the migration

Fucking old timers.

The Digg invasion was when this site went to shit. Before then, it was only mildly retarded. Here's comes hordes of diggers and other unsavory crackers. I say we all abandon reddit and go back to Digg, or just go fuck up Imzy. Is there a drama subwhateveryoucallit on Imzy? Someone make one and mod me, gingerbatshit, and Jewdunk.

Lol considering they market themselves as a "friendlier" (safespace) alternative to reddit I really doubt it.

It's only as safe as we allow it to be.

Voat markets itself as edgier, maybe rdrama should move there

Voat is full of mayophiles though.

Just think of all the delicious drama if the SJWs also went to voat though.

Seems like I signed up just yesterday and yet I'm in the 5 year club. Time flies.

tempus fuckit

You came over after the digg change? Go fuck yourself then for Ruining this site

It must be tiring having to write about everything so dramatically

We hear you, and have some of the same anxiety, which is why we're here now. Giving users a blank canvas has led to many wonderful developments on Reddit. This is not lost on us, and we'll work hard to continue to provide these surfaces for creativity.

/u/spez you sound like a goddamn soulless stuffed suit saying shit like this. I fucking hate you so much.

I was so mad I couldn't even come up with any good or creative insults :(

post party parrots instead while you still can

Where are they going and where do they come from????

I hear the admins really like " Fuck u/spez" .

A lot.

Mm, fresh pasta.

Typical Silicon Valley PR talk. San Francisco is a cancer on the tech industry.

wow this

this, but unironically

People overly attached to Reddit are gonna cry about it like it's the end of the site. Everybody else won't care. I can't see it on mobile and I have it turned off on most subs on desktop.

normie please go and give us some space to morn

r/spacetomorn

I made it, with my misspelling intact because fuck the (((dicktionary)))

I've posted this there. It's gone full circle now.

Thank you for your service

Give me rights to edit the css so I can plaster Morn from Star Trek all over it.

That's true, and because it's true it's just another nail in the coffin of reddit. It is becoming a 9gag/Buzzfeed clone. Lowest common denominator, here we go!

But which is worse 9gag or buzzfeed?

I'd much rather have a unique cesspit than a cringes mainstream site.

So what will this change?

Subreddits will completely lose CSS, making each subreddit look the same and no longer thematically unique.

The reasoning? Spez thinks CSS is hard

They're boxed in by bad design. I worked on a product that allowed user css customization.

If spez wants to add a new element to the page (an ad, new feature) and it looks like shit or doesn't render on half the site, well that's a problem.

Moderators, from what I could tell, though, are fine with supporting their custom styles, and they do it pretty well. Most subreddit styles though, from what I've seen, are mostly minor tweaks or stuff.

Also, communication could also help there so the "looks like shit or doesn't render on half the site" could not be a problem.

Or maybe work with mods so that they can get help making their custom CSS function and allow for ads? Seriously, so many problems Reddit as a company encounters and makes could be solved if they just talked to mods ffs.

Couldn't they also make CSS templates or something similar so there could be a standard that the subs could work with that would allow Reddit to do that they want? But nah, why work with the people who do all our work for us, fuck em! Let's introduce this thing no one really wants and mess up things even more.

The admins have to be idiots to allow reddit to continue to suck

🚫🚫🚫🚫

no more big obnoxious flairs

no more rotating sidebar pix

no more macros

no more meme arrows

:'(

Well, nothing I care about. I disable all that

In addition to /u/snallygaster's list, there is also party parrots.

There is also this relatively extenstive list which is on the /r/modnews thread.

Some of that stuff is pretty useful, which makes sense, CSS has always been one of the most massive improvements to the Internet since it came out.

...what are party parrots?

It is this (you'll have to enable CSS) ->

There is a subreddit for it and a website. It's an internet meme based off of a documentary. People created Slack emotes for it, and then it spread to reddit as well. Here is some more information about it.

That is why the title of this thread changes colors randomly too.

Man, my mobile app really needs to add css support. Thanks for the explanation though!

Yeah, no problem. :)

Can't believe no one has talked about the actual reason for this...

Ad visibility.

CSS made every page different and ads were easier to miss.

My prediction is something big is happening with ads that require subreddits to no longer have custom CSS.

I spent like 3 hours 2 weeks back making the biggest and most obnoxious flairs I could for /r/PKDefenseForce. And now all that is going to be lost. My beautiful sub is ruined.

I am sorry for your lots. 😢

WTF I suddenly love the redesign now.

My comparative advantage flair ;_;

Removing CSS is a mistake.

We're redesigning the site, which means the DOM (the underlying structure of the site) is going to change, which would break CSS and mod tools if we did nothing.

Hello digg v4 it's good to see you friend

Diggs issues were much larger then just the layout tbf, the power user situation over there was out of control, thats the reason I left.

Imagine if Reddit were to facilitate power users with something like individual profiles for each user where the users could post to instead of subreddits.

same shit different day

So, uh, when are we making a new reddit?

tbf, who the hell would subscribe to a user's profile if all they do is spam pics? most powerusers' personal subs are small and inactive because most powerusers just spam one-liners in AskReddit or post images all day. you need to produce actual content to gain a personal following beyond 'haha i see you in every thread'.

porn

I bet this is the real reason that was implemented

what if they post bussy tho

There's this neat thing, it's called "reposting."

see gallowboob

Snally they added profiles to attract the twitter celebrity crowd and turn reddit into is final form of gutter normie trash.

That may be true for you but for 90% of digg-fugees it was the redesign.

the power user situation over there was out of control

Yeah, because Reddit doesn't have that issue at all.

Its seriously nothing compared to Digg, There was literally half a dozen users on digg who determined what was going to be on the front page and it was all sponsored content.

It was mega dumb.

No you're right, instead of a handful of people getting their sponsored content onto the frontpage, we've got a handful of people getting their political ramblings to the frontpage instead. It's totally different.

at least we have the luxury of subreddit to unsubscribe to. im not saying its a perfect system but the level of quality of the content is way better.

No, it's completely different. Have you ever actually been to digg? Vote manipulation aside, imagine every single thing on the front page being posted by Gallowboob. Every single one.

That's it let's just make our own Reddit.

https://github.com/reddit/reddit/tree/master

Sperggit?

I saw we call it diggit so we can remember to never let anyone eff it up again!

CSS is a pain in the ass: it’s difficult to learn; it’s error-prone; and it’s time consuming.

You can't be serious with this shit /u/spez. CSS is the simplest shit in the world.

Like fuck it is, CSS is a the meathook abortion of "programming" (read:markup) languages.

PHP is easy to learn and it's utter shit. Something can be awful and still simple as shit.

I did a PHP once. It was awful.

I do PHP for a living. I have somehow convinced other people I can save their PHP projects for money. 😭

Bless your heart.

Yeah, but you have to always keep learning because it will continue to surprise you with how horrible it is.

Holy shit, finally! I have been featured!

Right? It takes half an hour and an internet connection to learn CSS. It's CSS for Christ's sake.

...I had a class on HTML and CSS. Turns out you can take half a semester to go over CSS.

It was hell.

I'm actually unironically REEEing about this tbh. This will actually fuck with my ability to enjoy the site.

Bress shuffleparrot to pay respect

Wait, you enjoy this?

I can't believe the poor bastard admitted that.

What can I say? I love me some partyparrots.

Plus shitposting and autistically mocking people for getting upset helps fill the hole in my heart.

Bless your heart

I'm with you tbh, this is the sort of out of touch corporate bs that kills websites.

right? the fuck is this shit?

bring ellen pao back tbh. she was gr8

This is the sort of shit that happens when the more technically gifted founders and coders on the site jump ship, and end up replaced with inexperienced idiots. This usually happens when a site gets too big for itself, and does something stupid such as, I don't know, moving the whole operation halfway across the country to San Francisco for no goddamn reason and forcing staff to relocate.

The only reason reddit is getting a major overhaul is because the corporate stooges now in charge don't know how the site works anymore.

Isn't spez one of the original founders tho? I mean he's clearly retarded either way, but IIRC he's not a corporate type.

True, but he wasn't a part of the company when all these stupid decisions were actually made.

Is this before or after you bring coffee to the real lawyers?

Zzzzzzzzzz. You were warned.

You can't dinger the zinger you fool

Someone make a good Reddit alternative already.

plz

I turn off subreddit styles by default but I think it's pretty shitty to deny subreddits the right to look the way they want.

CSS is a pain in the ass but there's not way that whatever half-assed solution Reddit comes up with will allow for the same amount of control and creativity.

Why use an existing/functional API when you can invent your own shitty API?

Stolen from 2016 Javascript Developers

Wrapped in Node.JS, plopped into a docker container.

LOOK DAD, I'M A PROGRAMMER AND AN ADMIN!!!

Particularly funny because I'm finally actually getting around to learning the Node ecosystem after a long time developing with Python and PHP.

Aside from there being a million different front and backend solutions to choose from, none of them seem to have decent tutorials. It's like JS programmers lost the ability to actually explain what their framework does without using a million different buzzwords (and at least 3 different build systems).

javascript protip: if you ever find yourself thinking "i could totaly replace this insane fucking redux thing with a single event emitter class that i could write in under ten minutes" you are correct, and that is in fact what you should do. it will save you much time and sanity.

Some kid here.

Fuck javascript.

JavaScript beardtip: use gnu make

once time i made my own frontend build chain using rake. the whole thing was shorter than the equivalent grunt config file.

Your main problem was using grunt over gulp.

And break your IDE with #directives. Great idea.

source maps are fucking shit they dont really work.

Interesting, because I'm using some right now in another tab.

Node is a minefield of poorly documented components written to their maximum utilization, tied up with a MIT license bow, and left to rot on npm.

I reimplemented a project in Java/GWT in a day after having racked my head for a week in Node. Fuck Node.

lol yeah, like Java was the best example of a lean, streamlined web technology.

It’s web-only. Increasing users are viewing Reddit on mobile (over 50%), where CSS is not supported. We’d love for you to be able to bring your spice to phones as well.

If only there were a way for sites to query the type of media a device might support, and serve the proper CSS accordingly.

And only if there was a way to put that in some kind of Web View...

Most sub's customs styles suck nuts and make the shit unusable, however this will probably not be a net positive change since it seems very rarely are administrative changes net positives around here.

widgets

they want to kill the site don't they

They want to dumb the site down so it appeals to your parents, and a key to that is making the mods replaceable. Deleting CSS is a twofer.

Widgets - that just smells like Web 2.0, the Vista sidebar, WordPress and php4 all over again.

Can't wait for the WoW beta u gaiz

microsoft started that shit with the Active Desktop back in 1997. It was fucking awful then too.

reddit is literally run by cuckolds

you just know that alexis is the bottom in that relationship. this is what tennis people refer to when they say serena is a 'power' player and loves to 'smash' the ball with her racket

somewhere within the confines of alexis's abode you'll find a foot long black diamond-encrused strap-on dildo that his better and blacker half dons each night while they have intercourse in alexis's soon-to-be-bled asshole

Now they take away CSS

Do the admins actually want to ruin this site?

Mixed feelings. Some subs have absolutely atrocious styles to them.

well that's funny because Steam in general looks like fucking garbage.

Meh I think it looks fine, but there is at least a choice if you don't like their custom CSS. What the admins want to do is to remove the choice altogether.

One of the sticky posts on /r/ProCSS talks about how the CSS is just about how the CSS is just about appearances about creating better functionality. Without custom CSS, the admins would have to introduce the functionality they're removing on their own. And we all know how Reddit isn't good at introducing new functionality in a timely and working manner. Go check out that post!

Come to /r/ProCSS. We mods are organizing against the removal of CSS.

I'm in recruitment mode. CSS is coming tomorrow.

The mods of /r/spacetomorn stand with you.

But... you're the only mod and you just made that subreddit yesterday. Hahahahaha thanks for your support.

How about everyone starts making their own subs and makes a stickied post that they want custom CSS (while having custom CSS in their subs). For the lolz and the protest! :D

No party parrots? I'm out. Also your sub looks terrible.

We are taking this subject very seriously. Everything we do, is so that you have the ability to use partyparrot (and all his friends) in the future.
