As an old, I don't know anything about this, but it is pretty crazy how effective product placement can be when you really like the show/movie/whatever that's doing the placement. I feel like people who think they are immune to marketing and advertising are in fact SUPER responsive to it, so long as it's done in a way that they don't notice. I think part of the reason people didn't care so much or immediately get turned off about the product placement or unapologetic mention of McDonald's in the episode was that the sauce itself was the ridiculous part, where it was obvious it wasn't that special, was not especially memorable, and was just silly as fuck for Rick to have gotten hung up on. It also was unavailable for purchase regardless because it was so old, so it didn't feel like it was being slung at the consumer for purchase.
