We get this question a lot here in /r/gardening, but I don't mind answering it again.

It really all depends on what you are going for. People commonly weed their gardens for aesthetics and a misconception that weeds are bad for the health of your grass and other plants. Believe it or not, there are many ways that weeds can help not only your garden, but also the environment as a whole.

Weeds attract many "beneficial" bugs to your garden. Things like bees, praying mantises and predatory wasps will use your weeds as shelter and a place to find food. These bugs can keep the "bad" bugs away from your garden. Weeds also help keep down the erosion in topsoil, which will directly help keep your plants alive longer.

And as far as the environment, many of the chemicals people use to remove weeds have been proven to be carcinigenic and harmful for the environment in general. Run of from your lawn can move those chemicals into nearby water sources - harming the aquatic inhabitants of those areas.
