PE is just so dreadful. It generates such an awful gendered environment. It starts with the way that sport is gendered, and gendered as a test of your masculinity. Then it's reinforced with the splitting of groups by genders - known by everyone ever to produce the worst of toxic masculinity. Then teachers work to reinforce gender norms within sports, sometimes with homophobic and gender non-conforming bullying (and turning a very blind eye to such) of students.

I'm absolutely certain it's killing boys. I don't just mean with suicide, but with long-term aversions to physical exercise. It took me over fifteen years to get over the mental scarring associated with exercise.

I spent five years learning nothing but gendered shame to associate with doing exercise. Throw in random non-gendered abuse and negative reinforcement. It's so toxic.

It's unbelievable that - in 2018 - we're willing to put kids through this hell. I think this is one of those things that future generations will look back on, and wonder how something so ubiquitously awful was allowed to go on for so long.

I have a theory about this, though. People don't like being confronted with their own horrible behavior. So when they're called out on it, they look for ways to defend what they were doing rather than say "aw shit, yeah, I guess we shouldn't have done that".

1. drunkentune (IRL), along with large swathes of the professional philosophy community, gained minor notoriety for being an especially loud (but again, far from unique) critic of Kathleen Stock, a philosopher of fiction who more recently has gained her own notoriety for being an especially loud defender of "TERF" or "Gender Critical" philosophy online (she does not work on this academically). The most common criticism was that her articles defending these are bad and harmful to trans people. Not exactly "Wrongthing" so much as "Bad Thinking".

2. At one point Stock falsely accuses drunkentune of defamation, after already deliberately exposing drunkentune to harassment and abuse from her followers several times over, he is not the only person to whom this has happened. Brian Leiter gets involved to back up Stock and sic his twitter followers on drunkentune (forcing drunkentune to lock his twitter account to repel the abuse, for example). Leiter's main claim to fame is probably that he is probably the most universally loathed person in academic philosophy who doesn't have a sex conviction; frivolous claims of "defamation" against his perceived enemies is one of his favourite silencing methods, but he has also been known to send bags of actual human excrement in the mail to people he doesn't like.

3. A disgruntled MA student, who was banned from /r/badphilosophy for some reason to do with Stock, actively dug up drunkentune's real identity - he did not just casually know it - and then sent it to Brian Leiter. He did this so that Leiter could continue to hurl abuse and harassment drunkentune's way. Leiter also quoted drunkentune kvetching about Stock under his reddit username, which apparently somehow justifies the doxxing.

To clarify: nobody involved has given any higher justification for exposing drunkentune's anonymity than that he kvetched about her online, and used the word "toxic" in doing so. A parallel justification appears to be that /r/badphilosophy is "immature" which...fine. How this is supposed to make Leiter or the MA student look good is totally beyond me.

1. In response to the doxxing, he nukes his account to prevent further attempts to harass him and/or hound him of the academy for...I'm still not quite sure what it is he's supposed to have done wrong. Other than defame Stock, which he hasn't.

2. Leiter has also continued to hound drunkentune, most recently by publishing a hoax email he received from an anonymous tipster in an apparent attempt to demonstrate how easy it is to fool Leiter - and his followers - by appealing to his lower impulses. Interestingly, although I don't have confirmation about this from Stock (and why the fuck would I solicit such confirmation?), after careful thought about this I think she objected most of all to drunkentune's claim that she had campaigned to deny trans people fundamental rights.

This is the closest to a defamatory claim that she could have objected to in the tweet that she quoted. It is the closest in the sense that it is arguably a factual claim, and it is a claim which is very specific. Other claims made in that tweet, such as - paraphrasing, "she made spaces unsafe for trans people" are sufficiently vague, and sufficiently a matter of opinion, that they are less obvious candidates for words she thinks are defamatory. But the question rests on whether or not trans people have those rights in the first place, and clearly drunkentune and Stock have an authentic disagreement about who counts as having the rights generally ascribed to women, so it cannot be defamation without a plausible legal argument that trans women do not have the rights that cis women have; natch, to be recognised as women.

As such, it's the case that Stock is putting the cart before the horse, because she has still never provided an account of how trans women are not women. She has provided an account of how trans women are not, in her estimation, "biologically female", and pretended to ground her arguments on that basis. So she leaves an open goal which, again, is a big surprise.
