That always bothered me, too. It's literally easier to walk on water than to magically pick locks. Shit doesn't mechanically make sense at all.

i'm a gaymer and I've played my fair bit of all the elder scrolls games other than arena and I found skyrim to be pretty solid too, it just has crappy immersion and stories and a pretty boring world which are what the series was known for. skyrim is definitely a worse elder scrolls game than oblivion and morrowind but it would take a colossal dumbass to think its a worse mass-appeal game, people pretending plebs shouldn't like it because its not morrowind are the real gaymers

New Vegas is second best tops, unless you like the original in which case it's third.

I think the original is better than a lot of people give it credit for, but New Vegas is definitely better than 2, which was a rushed sequel that ended up that started the whole "cartoon '50s" thing that Bethesda would later run with, was filled with loads of questionable pop culture references, and bas rushed-production cracks that begin showing in force once you hit San Francisco.

NV surpasses it in a ton of ways, like the faction system and the reactivity that stems from it, the structure of the main quest and the continuous support for different playstyles — and these aren't just minor things but some of the biggest strengths of the whole series. The quest design is also pretty damn impressive at times, although there are also some weaker moments in the mix, which can be mostly forgiven due to the sheer scope of the game. The only real problems stem from the (admittedly common) clunk leftover from FO3.
