Oh no, I think he is actually a very good actor, and I love Nightcrawler. However, I don't think the general perception by either the Academy of the theater-going public is that he's a serious, and he clearly wants to change that imo. So I'm not surprised that he's bowing out early, despite playing an iconic character, so that he doesn't get typecast as "another one of the hammy melodramatic capeshit actors who tell funny jokes".
I'd make the comparison to Beat Takeshi: one of the greatest serious actors and directors in Japan's history, not taken seriously at all early in his dramatic career because he started out doing slapstick comedy. Gyllenhaal started with schlocky romcoms and melodramas for the most part. It makes sense that he wants to avoid being caught up in more of those and instead focus on more projects similar in weight to Zodiac, Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain, and Enemy.
I think he’s known for the heavier movies more than his origin stuff. If you like the actor, I can really recommend Prisoners. He plays a really great character in a dark story.
It’s setting up for a lot more, especially with the clip where mysterious reveals peters identity. I’m hoping the next few movies are more “spider-man-y” if you know what I mean
