The Deccan Traps

Its new advertisement 'Kachra Bhi Khelega' — meant to be an awareness campaign about food waste and recycling — has drawn backlash for being insensitive and casteist. After being called out on social media, Zomato has withdrawn its ad and issued an apology.

For the unversed, the hit 2001 film Lagaan featured a marginalized Dalit character who was ostracized from the village due to his caste. Throughout the film, his real name is not revealed and instead, other characters use 'Kachra' as a casteist slur to refer to him.

Later, in the course of the film, he is included in the cricket team by Aamir Khan despite the backlash from other team members. He eventually helps the team win against the British players.

Such a casteist story

In a bid to promote environmental cleanliness, Zomato aimed to focus on the importance of recycling, and gave several examples of how waste can be recycled into various products.

However, to depict their idea, they use the Lagaan actor to play the recycled products including a towel, lamp, and a table.

Naturally, the ad did not sit well with social media users. They were quick to point out that the creators were highly tone-deaf and casteist.

The problematic Zomato ad prompted people to point out that the voiceless character only played into the fancy of an upper-caste 'saviour complex' and wasn't an authentic or sensitive depiction of a Dalit person.

Why wasn't a garbageman in 19th century India well versed in Marxist theory and social justice literature

After the backlash, Zomato has taken down their ad and given out an official statement. They wrote, "On world environment day, our intent was to spread awareness about the potential of plastic waste and benefits of recycling in a humorous way. Unintentionally, we may have hurt the sentiments of certain communities and individuals. We have taken down the video."

Meanwhile I was at this cafe a couple of weeks ago where an Indian dude was going on giving a trillion orders to the server and then walked right into the kitchen. Dude wanted his avocado sometjing exactly how he wanted. Once he stepped out we could hear the cooks and wait staff cussing hi behind his back for being such a picky jerk. Indians are no less in being downright entitled at times. This was in Mumbai.

I assume you are white. I used to work as a waiter while in college, and I hated serving Indian customers. They would snap their finger at me, would drive me insane. And they give very little tips, if they tip at all. Maybe like in India, they feel they should be nice to the firangi while it's ok to be rude to their own.

OP says he's an American, so they're probably talking about serving Indian immigrants in the US, where it's customary to tip, but Indian immigrants have a reputation for being "cheap" and not tipping. American servers consider tip a right. In India the servers are expected to serve portions on the plate and then come back when that’s devoured. All that service and tips are still not customary. In America, tips are demanded and not expected.

A guy who has to actually earn his bread daily(as in starve if he can't) losing work for months, having to walk home thousands of kilometers isn't justified in a single outburst at someone he believes, however unjustified that might be, to be the cause. But some cumskin working 4 hours a day earning more than most unskilled positions in even his first world country(which is like 50 times what the labourer does) is totally justified for chimping out about the few cases where he can't make bank. That’s because in US you’re actually paying the salary and not a tip. American waiting staff has to deal with below minimum wage pay and expect tips.

Portions in the US are usually too large for me (about double the average portion served in India). Most of the time we end up splitting a dish between a couple of us, or we need a takeout box.
