Elon Musk fires Tesla's entire supercharger team

Electric-car maker's public policy unit also being disbanded as chief announces in memo hundreds more jobs to be cut

Elon Musk has shut down the division that runs Tesla's Supercharger business, dismissed two senior executives and fired hundreds more staff as the electric-car maker continues its restructuring amid a sharp downturn in the EV market.

Musk announced internally on Monday that the head of the superchargers group, Rebecca Tinucci, and Daniel Ho, head of new products, would be leaving along with their entire teams. About 500 people were in the supercharger group, the memo said.

Tesla's supercharger system is among the largest charging networks in the world, and was one the reasons the company enjoyed such a commanding lead over rival carmakers for so long. While the supercharger operations will continue, the move raises questions over the future of the charging business.

The entire public policy unit will also be disbanded following the departure of its leader, Rohan Patel, in the middle of April.

“Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction,” Musk wrote in the memo, which was first reported by The Information. “While some execstaff are taking this seriously, most are not yet doing so.”

Any manager “who retains more than three people who don't obviously pass the excellent, necessary and trustworthy test” should resign, he added.

Tesla shares, which fell 5.5 per cent on Tuesday, were down another 2.6 per cent in pre-market trading at $178.53 on Wednesday.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

[article continued]

The latest dismissals at the company come after Musk announced last month that the carmaker would cut “more than 10 per cent” of its total workforce, more than 14,000 jobs, in order to be “lean, innovative and hungry”.

The urgency of the shift was underlined by Tesla reporting a decline of almost 10 per cent in revenues in the first quarter of this year, its first year-on-year quarterly drop since the start of 2020. The share price has more than halved from its November 2021 peak of just under $410 a share.

The decision took staff by surprise. Will Jameson, who worked in the Tesla supercharger team, wrote on X that Musk “has let our entire charging org go”. Another employee of that division, George Bahadue, posted on LinkedIn confirming he had been let go.

He added: “What this means for the charging network, [North American Charging Standard] NACS, and all the exciting work we were doing across the industry, I don't yet know. What a wild ride it has been.”

When Jameson was asked by a reader on X why the entire division had been let go, he replied “your guess is as good as mine”.

Musk said in the memo that superchargers sites under construction would be finished and “some” new locations would be constructed.

The surprise move comes despite Tesla having built the dominant EV charging network with 50,000 sites globally and 15,000 in North America. Recently it has signed contracts with several rivals, including Ford, General Motors and Rivian, to use its NACS charging standard.

Models from other carmakers will be able to use its branded charging stations, potentially bringing Tesla a significant revenue stream, as well as establishing it as the de facto industry standard.

Tinucci, Ho and Patel are not the only long-standing Musk lieutenants to leave this year. Drew Baglino, senior vice-president leading Tesla's engineering and technology development for batteries, motors and energy products, resigned in April and Martin Viecha, its head of investor relations, said he would step down on the company's first-quarter earnings call last week.

In a post on X, Musk said the carmaker would continue to grow its supercharger network “at a slower pace for new locations”.

“More focus on 100 per cent uptime and expansion of existing locations,” he wrote.

The game is made by a guy called SigmaSuccour. Who is this young upstart you might ask? Well, here's what we know about him:

He was an up-and-coming RPG Maker dev much adorned by that community. This all changed when they found out that he's a Pakistani Muslim whose views on the LGBTQAWhatever community coincided with the views of most Pakistani Muslims. Shocker, I know. His views on gays and co. are actually probably more moderate than an average Paki, but that still didn't stop them from throwing a tantrum about him.

This guy properly summarizes the situation.

So, what did our boy Sigma do as a response when this came out? Well, of course, he did what he does best, he made a game addressing his critics.

The game, as you would expect, had a mixed reception.

Sigma Male, of course, didn't take this lying down, and he made sure to respond to these Islamophobic buggery enthusiasts.

Also, he's pro-AI.

Then, G*merGate 2 happened, and our boy Sigma decided to get on the bandwagon. He decided to make a game about G*merGate, a movement that he found fraternal ties to, I guess, and he was borderline spamming the /r/KotakuInAction board with updates to his game. At first, the Gaymers thought that the whole thing was kinda cringe, but even they eventually got charmed by his passion for the project.

And now, the game has been released on Itch.io. I hope you enjoy it, if for no other reason, than for the drama it resulted from.

I left this open because there's simply no way of not looking suspicious otherwise.

However, as usual, the comments and general lack of knowledge astound me. Heck, I'm surprised at the shear quantity of scathing comments regarding the pricing. Competition exists, just buy a cheaper brand? Watercool is always cheaper and the quality is solid, why just hate on a brand for no reason if you have no intention of buying their product anyway? Either way, regardless of the outcome of all this, very disappointing news, and very disappointing seeing what this sub can be like.

Part 2 Thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/1cfeoyg/exposing_corruption_eks_prison_threats_lawsuits/?sort=controversial

Now the :marseyjanny: falls in line

This kind of scandal NEVER ends well in communities as small as these. Larger companies can get away with this kind of shit because most people don't know/care. Spaces as small as watercooling? Word gets around fast because almost everyone is keeping an eye/ear out. A different scandal happened in the home theater space where Lexicon got caught taking cheap products from other companies and slapping their own label on them without changing anything (except the price by a factor of 10x), ruined their reputation permanently and now the brand is essentially dead weight in Harman's lineup. Didn't matter that they had made some of the finest home theater equipment in the past, the brand's reputation was effectively ruined. With the half-assed apology and the fact that EK has already been slipping in terms of quality over the years, I can't see them coming back from this. Will they still be around? Perhaps, but I don't think they'll be nearly as big as they once were in the industry after this and there's no way that whatever crawls out of the ashes is going to be able to offer anything even remotely close to their current catalog. They'll have their loyalists I'm sure but there's no way they'll be able to maintain the brand as it stands.

Now do ya'll remember the LTT Expose he did? yeah the LTTcels haven't stopped coping seething and dilating about it

When schools send a bunch of cops in to fight college students, it immediately makes them look brave and justifies their cause. Everyone roots for the underdog especially when they're actually risking something.

Meanwhile at UCLA they're just letting the protestors do whatever. So they're inevitably making themselves look bad.

Beloved parts of campus are spray-painted with cringe anarchy symbols. Walkways are blocked so students can't get to class. Protestors keep climbing onto building scaffolding which impedes construction for no reason. There's a PSA that no bananas or peanuts are allowed at the encampment because someone has an allergy.

I can feel the vibe slowly beginning to shift against them just because they keep doing stupid college-student type stuff.

They really only win when images of cops arresting them are promulgated through the mainstream, because they invoke the cultural memory of Kent State and student protests of the 60s. Columbia is the most embarassing example because the administration is allowing Elise Stefanik to dictate their response because they're more afraid of protecting their jobs, which is ironic because they'll probably be losing them soon and having a Scarlett letter going forward in left spaces because of how they treated them. The Republicans couldn't be happier that this implosion is happening in an election year, it's just impressive that the Biden administration has been able to side step for this long.

Please COPS! PLEASE BEAT US TO DEATH! :marseybegging:

The video of the Columbia students who took over a building requesting humanitarian aid at a press conference was so embarrassing. The video of the horse cops breaking up the UT protest was embarrassing. Ignoring seems to be the only good method.

:chudsmug:

A picture of themself being arrested is what they need to propel their post Uni activism career.

:marseyagree:

This sub gets too caught up in optics. The reality is repression is effective. It may strengthen passive activism and sympathy, but those people don't do a thing. They're not a problem. Meanwhile repression actively hinders a sizeable part of the demographics that aren't useless, the ones actively doing something. It's a net positive to dissuade them with violence. This is based on my experience in France, maybe not fully applicable to the US where protests are a lot more performative in nature.

:marseyconfused2: neighbor wat

I thought this sub would be sympathetic to the protestors :marseyconfused:

everyone here probably aligns with the protestors morally and ethically but it's always frustrating to see the left lose the war of optics because we can't help but be cringe. :marseycringe2:

I'm so checked out, how are they being cringe? All I see is them having occupied the national spotlight and a heightening of political tension :marseysoycry:

They took over Hamilton Hall (I'm fine with this) and then during a press conference today talked about the need for students occupying the Hall to receive "basic humanitarian aid" unless Columbia wants them to "starve and die of thirst". When told by a reporter that they are simultaneously calling themselves revolutionaries while also asking to be fed by Columbia, she says they aren't asking to be fed but asking "that they don't violently stop us from bringing in basic humanitarian aid". When asked if Columbia is stopping delivery of food, she says they are "looking for a commitment that they won't". Just unbelievably cringe. To top it off stood behind her during this conference is a bearded man wearing a crop top and keffiyeh

Seen another one of students who were asked what the goal was. She said showing support for Palestine and demanding NYU stops. When asked "stops what?" she says "Honestly I'm not so sure" then she asks the girl next to her what they are protesting for NYU to stop and she says "I wish I were more educated on that".

There was a student with a "severe banana allergy" so the encampment was made a banana free zone, but Zionist anti-protestors brought bananas and laughed while eating them from a distance which made the students furious.

For anyone averse to cringe its really hard to cheer these people on

Why would anyone care about how others eat their food?

I do not care if people break spaghetti because they want smaller pieces.

I do care if they break it to "make it fit in the pot".

Because it softens enough in boiling water to bend and fit after a few seconds. So people who break it for that purpose, are blatently lacking in basic critical and logical thinking, and they need to learn so they stop perpetuating that nonsense.

For people who just want smaller pieces, that's fine. Since that type of pasta isn't available in all stores, and might even be more expensive based on where you are because of much lower mass production numbers.

Because Italian food is the only thing left of the Roman Empire.

most historically literate redditor :#marseytomato:

If you saw someone wearing shoes upside down with their laces tied around their ankles wouldn't you say

"Hey! There's a better way to do that! That's not how you use shoes!"

This is the same concept but with chefs and Italians

:#marseysoycrytremble:

I mean if I live with them and they waste a lot of food I might care a bit.

I know cutting crust off is a waste of food, but how is breaking pasta a waste?

If you really want to put it that way, when you try to break a noodle, you'll notice it always breaks into three pieces, the middle piece can be very small if you do it with your hands close to each other, but you will always lose a small amount of pasta by breaking it.

I just noticed you can even see it in the post all the lil pieces flying all around the photo lol

:#soyjakanimeglassestalking:

That's why you break them over the pot, angled so the broken bits go into the pot. It's an easy fix.

:#soymad:

Almost like basic reasoning can answer his problem.

"You break da pasta and it flies forward!" Hmm, maybe break it into the pot?

But why breaking it in the first place?

I think to fit it in the pot so one half isn't undercooked vs the side that's not in water

... are you all out there just yeeting pasta into a pot and leaving it to boil unattended

If I wanted to attend my food I wouldn't be making spaghetti

:#marseyhesright:

I don't see any issues with modifications on food. Do whatever for you to eat. Who cares

yeah! let me eat my bananas with ketchup in peace

As much as an abomination this is, if someone likes it then that's on them

I put Nutella and mayo on meat lovers pizza it's such a great combo

:marseyhappening:Claire kino is back :marseywereback:

Well technically, 2nd one time thing. She did this video for gourmet confetti cake before.

To everyone who's not familiar with the background:

Bon Appetit is a Conde Nast Magazine

Its Youtube Channel used to have a video series where Claire Saffitz made gourmet versions of commercially available food products: Gourmet Makes.

The series is responsible for a lot of Bon Appetit's most popular videos, accounting for half of the current top twenty most viewed videos on the Bon Appetit channel.

However, when people found out Bon Appetit pays different rates for different talents, some people accused Bon Appetit of racism. (Why would BA pay someone who gets them 10 million views the same as someone who gets them sub 100k views though?).

People went through old tweets from BA's top editor and one of Conde Nast's VPs and found old chuddy tweets, so Bon Appetit got cancelled.

A lot of their talent cut ties as a result, with varying levels of success for those talents.

Claire Saffitz was one of the breakout stars of the channel so a lot of the BA audience followed her when she went solo.

She's had success in her cookbooks and youtube channel.

She's held back on making videos where she makes gourmet versions of commercially available food products so far in her post-BA youtube career.

Nobody's sure if she has done so because she doesn't want legal trouble for yoinking the IP or if she wants to pivot her identity away from the series to establish herself as a pastry chef and recipe developer.

However, the views of her most popular videos still pale in comparison to the views Gourmet Makes garnered. Her current most popular video has 4.4 million views, whereas the most popular Gourmet Makes video has 13 million views.

Her 10 latest videos before this video averages at around 250k views, with the oldest having a 4-month headstart and the newest having a 1-month headstart.

The current video has gotten more than that in just 1 day.

What do y'all dramanauts think?
