GameStop shares fall 20% after it files to sell additional stock, says first quarter sales dropped

  • GameStop will sell up to 45 million common shares in an at-the-market offering.

  • The video game retailer reported preliminary results that showed a drop in first-quarter sales.

  • The news comes after GameStop's stock surged earlier this week in a brief revival of the meme stock trade.

GameStop shares tumbled 20% Friday after the video game retailer said it plans to sell additional shares and reported preliminary results that showed a drop in first-quarter sales.

In a new regulatory filing, the video game retailer said it will sell up to 45 million class A common shares in an at-the-market offering. The sale comes after GameStop shares surged earlier this week in a brief revival of the meme stock trade.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, GameStop said it now expects net first-quarter sales in the range of $872 million to $892 million, down from around $1.24 billion in the same quarter last year. Two analysts polled by FactSet said they expected a first-quarter revenue of around $1 billion.

GameStop's first-quarter net loss is expected to be between $27 million and $37 million, narrower than a net loss of $50.5 million in the year-earlier period. The brick-and-mortar company has been grappling with competition from e-commerce-based competitors. In late March, GameStop announced an unspecified number of job cuts to reduce costs.

The rally in GameStop this week appeared to be partially fueled by posts on X from the long-dormant account of โ€œRoaring Kitty,โ€ also known as Keith Gill, one of the key figures in the 2021 meme stock mania. GameStop hit a high of $64.83 per share on Tuesday, up more than 200% from close on May 10.

The rally fizzled out later in the week, with GameStop dropping sharply on Wednesday and Thursday. Shares closed Thursday at just $27.67, down more than 50% from the highs of the week. Net retail trader inflows have been much smaller than the amount seen during the trading frenzy three years ago.

Michael Pachter, a Wedbush analyst covering GameStop, said GameStop is not in a position to be profitable.

โ€œThey made $6 million last year and burned cash,โ€ Pachter said. โ€œWe expect them to lose $100 million a year going forward. It's a race to see if they can close stores fast enough to limit losses, but they have no plan that would suggest they can grow revenues or profits, and their core business is in decline.โ€

Pachter has an underperform rating on GameStop and a $5.60 price target.

Some background that Politico won't tell you: New Caledonia is a French colony integral part of France in the South Pacific. The French never gave it up because it has the world's largest nickel mine it's an integral part of France. There has long been a policy of encouraging white people to move there to dilute the native population allow them to enjoy the climate as well. Recently France revised the island's colonial diktat constitution in a naked power grab attempt to be raceblind, allowing recent immigrants to vote in local elections. The native population is naturally outraged too barbaric to understand.

How in the heck does Azerbaijan fit into this? France has always been a supporter of Armenia. This must be because of righteous outrage about the Armenian genocide, right? Not really. Remember how the Sykes-Picot Agreement promised what is now Syria and Lebanon to the French after WW1? It also promised a huge chunk of southeastern Anatolia to them. The plan was that they would set up a puppet state here. In typical imperialist divide and rule fashion, the Armenians were supposed to be their enforcers.

:#marseymime:

They ran into a couple of problems though. First was the whole genocide thing. I wish it wasn't a winning strategy but sometimes it is. There weren't enough Armenians left to carry out the plan. Second, the French had the best army in the world in 1918 but it didn't mean they had a lot of guys who wanted to keep fighting for some distant colony. The few guys they did send out were defeated by the resurgent Turkish nationalists under Mustafa Kemal. It's hard to win against a guy who's such a chad that he said to a subordinate at Gallipolli "I didn't order you to fight. I ordered you to die."

:#marseycool2:

As a legacy of this there's a large and influential Armenian diaspora community in France. They're still kind of mad about the whole genocide thing. Mad at Turkey but also Azerbaijan because, if you'll allow me to grossly oversimplify things, Azerbaijan is basically half Turkish/half Iranian and they (and the Kurds) are accused of participating in the genocide. Did they? I dunno, researching genocides is pretty depressing so I usually avoid it.

So that's how the native indigenous Kanaks of New Caledonia have common cause with people living on inland mountains on the other side of the world.
