My favourite part of school was when r-slurs would think they were beating the system by asking a middle school teacher to prove why the order of operations is what it is

We use "-" to denote two separate ideas. First, "-a" simply means the inverse of "a" in whatever group you're working with. Second, "a - b" is just shorthand for "a + (-b)". Thus, "4-(-4)" is equivalent to "4 + -(-4)" and "-(-4)" is simply 4 by the the uniqueness of additive inverses. Thus, "4-(-4) = 4+4 = 8".
It's best to pretend subtraction doesn't exist. Treat it as addition by the inverse instead.

first you have to ask why negative numbers make sense at all. There are no negative numbers in nature, its an abstraction.

There are no numbers in nature, for that matter.

There is nothing knowable outside our own experience, and therefore no such thing as "nature" for that matter.
But given what we can assume is standard human experience, nature definitely has stuff and some things have more stuff.

I can know that 2 + 2 = 4, regardless of any experience or nature. This is why idealist chads are right about everything.
