Weekly “what are you reading” Thread #20 :marseyreading:

To discuss your weekly readings of books, textbooks and papers.

I'm still early on The Grass is Singing, around page 60, but so it has been

>white trash South African girl grows up in poverty with a drunk father

>siblings die, she doesn't feel sad

>foid starts working, hangs out with several men

>enjoys the life of a single women, has many friends, parties a lot and feels happy

>she overhears her “friends” trashtalking her on a party, other foids wonder why dresses up like a 15year old when she's like 35, and why she is still single:marseymeangirls:

>Foid discovers she's a spinster, and now she's le sad

>She stops using girl skirts and sashes, starts wearing tailored dresses instead and feels miserable among men and everyone around:marseywall:

>lonely moid lives on a farm in Southern Rhodesia, meets her in a movie theater and starts simping after her:marseycoomer2:

>foid is desperate and accepts marrying him despite him telling her he's a poorcel who lives in the middle of nowhere:marseywomanmoment:

>foid hates her new home, she figures he has a pic of a 6year old girl on his wall, he immediately rips the photo apart.

Frick you David Robbins

There's a thick line between “building tension” and “wasting the reader's time.” @911roofer is One-fourth through you're stupid horror novel Wraith, and nothing has fricking happened except for the world's dullest plane hijacking, a boring rip-off of Indiana Jones, and someone's bowling night. The King James Bible is 783,137 words long.

In Search of Lost Time is 1,267,069 words long.

The Loud House: Revamped is at least 16,777,215 words long, having surpassed the fanfiction.net word limit a good few hundred chapters ago. This means, objectively, that it's at least 13 times as good as In Search of Lost Time, given its creator has obviously had so much practice.

I deliberately picked a relatively recent chapter so that hopefully we can see all that practice pay off.

Get ready to laugh

A fricking amazing opening paragraph. I have no idea who any of these characters are, or which ones are from The Loud House and which are OCs made by his fellow fanfiction.net authors (according to his bio he likes to add his friends' characters into his storyies, very wholesome), but I'm already enjoying this massively. The rest of the chapter is written like a script to a stage play so it's hard to post highlights, but I'll try.

Nico went to a lightswitch and flicked it and the lights flickered back on and it was a mess.

Laney: Whoa! What is this place?

Nico: This is the base of the agricultural terrorist group B.E.A.T.N.I.C.K.S.

Laney: What does that stand for?

Nico: It stands for Bad Entrepreneurs Are Targeting Natures Imports so Cantaloupes can be King so Strongly. They were a group that wanted to destroy the entire country's food supply so that only Cantaloupes can be the only food in the country.

We gasped!

Then, we saw Lincoln's body turn atomic red, and then, he really let out his anger. WE KNEW THAT IT MEANT TROUBLE!

Me and Nico: OH SHIT!

Lincoln: (SUPER NTH-DEGREE ENRAGED EXTREMELY ANGRY SCREAM) (RAINBOW ENERGY AURA FLARES UP EXTREMELY) I'M GONNA RIP YOUR CROTCH RIGHT OFF AND SHOVE IT RIGHT UP YOUR BUTT, AND THEN, I'M GONNA RIP YOUR ARMS OFF AND SHOVE THEM RIGHT UP YOUR EARS AND SHOVE YOUR LEGS RIGHT IN YOUR UGLY MOUTH! THEN, I'M GONNA TEAR YOUR UGLY HEAD OFF YOUR SHOULDERS, MOUNT IT ON A STAKE, AND PARADE IT THROUGH TOWN! THEN, I'LL TAKE YOUR HEADLESS BODY AND THROW IN THE DESERT FOR THE VULTURES AND OTHER CARNIVORES TO EAT!

May and Varie screamed as they hugged me and Nico tight.

Me and Nico: OH, NOW YOU'VE GONE AND FRICKING DONE IT!

Camie, Tsuyu, Sirius, Kaoruku, Himiko, Ibara, Toru, and Ochaco: THAT'S IT, NOW YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO FRICKING GET IT!

Suddenly, the eyes of Camie, Tsuyu, Sirius, Kaoruku, Himiko, Ibara, Toru, and Ochaco turned neon, and they were surrounded by colored energy auras, stars, elemental forces, and mythological animals, they unholstered their massive greatswords from their backs, and as they approached Travis Connors, they left colored energy, elemental forces, and mythological animals with every step. Suddenly, Camie, Tsuyu, Sirius, Kaoruku, Himiko, Ibara, Toru, and Ochaco were surrounded by massive vortexes of colored energy with stars and elemental forces surrounding them, there are mythological animals flying around the vortexes, and in the vortexes are colored phoenixes with red eyes glaring at Travis Connors: the red eyes of eternal death. Then, as the vortexes fade, Camie, Tsuyu, Sirius, Kaoruku, Himiko, Ibara, Toru, and Ochaco emerged, but they were changed forever.

Himiko Toga grew from 7'4" to 7'9" in height, she has metal gold bracers on her biceps and thighs, and she now has eleven large colored orbs orbiting around her legs, she has the body of a goddess, she has rainbow highlights in the bangs of her pale, dirty ash-blonde hair and she has a large golden halo in the center with golden angel wings on the bottom side and four large orbiting golden rings on each corner behind her head, she has neon brown eyes and a rainbow energy aura with stars, Fire, Water, Wind, Mountains, Lava, Light, Darkness, Thunder, Time, Flowers, Stars, The Sun, and The Moon, phoenixes, and angels surrounding her, she has a phoenix with the Element Kanji in its claws emblazoned on her forehead and Third Eye with rainbow iris, she has on phoenix earrings with rainbow gems for the eyes and the Element and Eternity Kanji in its claws, she has on her Crystal Necklace of The Buddha on her neck with rainbow gems embedded in the gold element symbol links and rainbow crystals links and a rainbow phoenix-shaped Element of Harmony and on the bottom of the Element of Harmony is a phoenix with rainbow gems for the eyes and the Element and Eternity Kanjis in its claws for the pendant. Himiko Toga has on a white long-sleeved blouse and white long-sleeved shirt with a rainbow phoenix on it, white skirt with elemental forces on it, black pants with elemental forces on the legs, black knee-high leather boots, and a long white sleeveless trenchcoat with Fire, Water, Wind, Mountains, Lava, Light, Darkness, Thunder, Time, Flowers, Stars, The Sun, and The Moon on the coattails, and on the back is the emblem of Lady Elementa and the symbols of the elemental forces. Suddenly, Himiko Toga felt a sharp pain on her back, and then, her massive ash-blonde angel wings with rainbow tips on the large ash-blonde feathers grew much bigger for her new body, she has on a Ring of The Phoenix with large rainbow gem and heart-shaped gem embedded in it on her right ring finger and a Yellow Lantern ring on her left ring finger and Stone of Gelel embedded in her left hand.

Suddenly, Himiko Toga's massive he Philippines Gods of Nature's Elemental Greatsword of Elemental Redemption and all the greatswords and swords she'd gotten in the treasure battles began merging together, and were surrounded by a kaleidoscope of rainbow energy and elemental forces, and when the kaleidoscope faded, it was transformed into Himiko Toga's Philippines Elemental Gods of Nature's Elemental Greatsword of Elemental Redemption, it's a brand-new massive greatsword with embedded colored gems and the symbols of The Redemption Squad and U.A. High School along with the Philippine Gods of Nature etched on the 7'6" massive, wide, double-edged rainbow blade, large rainbow dragon heads for the crossguard, large white angel faces built into the hilt with large rainbow gems embedded in the foreheads, longer midnight black handle, four large rainbow dragon heads with yellow gems for eyes and on the bottom of the dragon heads is a large dragon head with large rainbow gem in its mouth for the pommel, she has on her new large gold Bracers of the Champions of The Universe with rainbow gems on her wrists and Dragon Ball Bracelet on her left gold Bracer, large gold Belt of Elemental Bravery with a gold dragon head with rainbow gems for the eyes and a large rainbow gem in its open mouth for the belt buckle, large rainbow-colored leather and gold metal bound Elemental Spellbook of Harmonious Justice, Eternal Harmony, and Equestrian Peace and Talisman Cards of The Universe and Talisman Cards of Eternal Elemental Harmony on her right hip and Eater of Sins revolver holstered on her left hip. There's a rainbow kanji below the emblem of Lady Elementa that said, "Himiko Toga Also Known As Lady Elementa, Former Lieutenant of the Paranormal Liberation Front and Former Member of The League of Villains, Loving Adopted Daughter of Misty Tredwell and James Dean Knudson, Loving Girlfriend of Izuku Midoriya, Archenemy of LeFou, Destroyer of One For All, Brave Warrior of The Cosmos, Protector, Defender, and Savior of The Universe, Multiverse, and Beyond, Ambassador and Beacon of Hope to The Universe, Master of The Powers of Friendship and The Elements, Master of The Fury of Celestial Xelnaga, Master of The Black Gates, Ultimate Force of Ultimate Good, True Goddess of Truth, Justice, Love, Compassion, Hope, Forgiveness, Valor, Virtue, Determination, Loyalty, Honesty, Generosity, Kindness, Selflessness, Courage, and Trust, Destroyer and Slayer of Evil, Deranged, Murderous, Ruthless, and Sadistic Bastards, Amazing and Powerful Student of Amazing and Powerful Teachers, Emissary and Champion of Lalahon, Aman Sinaya, Habagat, Dumakulem, Bathala, Sitan, Kadakan, Gugurang, Kan-Loan, Apolaki, Mayari, Sisina, and Tala, and Elemental Forces, Phoenixes, and Angels"

:#marseyshook:

I have no idea what this means. Let's skip ahead some more.

After destroying Mileena and sealing her into The Book of Vile Darkness with a much stronger seal and The Whispering Wraith's Vengeance Curse on her, we were training intensely in the gym, doing 900,000,000,000,000 reps of crunches, wing push-ups, one-finger push-ups, and regular push-ups, pull-ups, lat pulldowns, bicep curls, leg curls, and chest presses with 900,000,000,000-lb barbells, squats, and going a few rounds with the punching bags, and we were really sweating like crazy, even doing yoga to clear our minds, and we were also doing 900,000,000,000,000 reps of tail bicep curls to get our eleven massive and long wolf tails even more stronger than ever as well, and when Maria Toadstool saw Lincoln doing 900,000,000,000,000 reps of crunches, wing push-ups, one-finger push-ups, and regular push-ups, pull-ups, lat pulldowns, bicep curls, leg curls, and chest presses with 900,000,000,000-lb barbells, squats, and going a few rounds with the punching bags, even doing yoga to clear his mind and doing 900,000,000,000,000 reps of tail bicep curls to get his eleven massive and long white wolf tails even more stronger than ever, she had an atomic red blush on her face, hearts in her eyes, and her nose was bleeding.

Maria Toadstool: My God, I was right that Lincoln's really grown into a 18-year-old, 8'3" tall, really big, handsome, sexy, and extremely super strong manly man, just look at those abnormally massive and powerful upper and lower body muscles and his eight-pack abs really hard at work, and really working out with those 900,000,000,000-lb barbells and he's not even getting tired, incredible, and he also got one awesome tan, and he's also doing 900,000,000,000 reps of tail bicep curls to get his eleven massive and long white wolf tails even more stronger than ever, and he now looks even more ripped than ever. He's definitely been continuing on bodybuilding and working out even more for many years, and because of that along with the combination of his diet plan that we gave him, along with his hyperpuberty and genes, he'd gained the powerful and massive body that all bodybuilders could only dream of. If anyone tried to mess with him now, they were in for a world of hurt and trouble, and he's always been there to defend and protect us from Chandler, his goons, Pablo, Anderson, and Hawk and Hank at school or out in public, and he was also quick to defend us from Lori, Lynn, Lola, Lisa, and Luan if they get out of search control again, along with Killjoy Huggins.

This is fricking awesome. This right here is why literature is worth reading. I've not actually read this entire chapter (sorry :marseybottom) but the rest of it seems to more or less involve characters growing from seven to eight feet tall and women falling in love with Lincoln while J.D. just kind of hangs around. As J.D. would say, see you next time :marseybye:

To discuss your weekly readings of books, textbooks and papers.

I finished “The Remains of the Day”, the book was much sadder than I expected :marseysad:, Stevens is a man filled with regrets and he suffers deeply for it, but he always does so in silence to maintain what his calls “dignity” in his profession, the parts where he cuts up ties with Miss Kenton is quite heartbroken considering she was almost begging for him to say something about her leaving. The title refers to old age, Stevens ponders about enjoying what “remains of his day” as the butler on the pier told him something along the lines of “the evening is the best part of the day, you have done all your work, now you can put up your feet and enjoy yourself” :marseysadge:

Inspired by all the recent Rhodesia posting and by a dramanaut rec, I started reading “The Grass is Singing”. Is BIPOC a common Bong slur too? I always thought it was a US thing, but this is the second Bong authored book I read (after Heart of Darkness) were bongs utter the BIPOC word.

Truly a masterpiece. After reading such a divine work, I have found true enlightenment. If God doesn't exist, then explain this masterpiece. Checkmate, atheists.

3

The greatest masterpiece I have most probably ever read. It's got everything required for a perfect novel. Even under pressure the author was able to bring such an epic story. I'm moved to tears. The grammar and writing was excellent. There were certain moments I had to reread certain parts to understand the profoundness of the text.

The Main character. The MC in this novel is too wonderful, maybe too complex. You'll shed tears when you reach the chapter/chapters where you'll learn his past. A tragic protagonist with a purpose in life. An important thing to note is that this novel does NOT have any kind of plot armor which makes it much more realistic.

The Romance. The romance was just lovely. The love triangle in this novel can be considered one of the best I have ever seen. Also the main female lead has a proper REASON to fall for the MC, unlike some other novels.

4

I cried... because I don't have even 0.1% of the talent of this autor... because this godly story hitted a soft spot of my heart... because love, hatred, hopelessness, joy and sadness, and even lack of understanding blend together in a sort if vortex which"ll litterally send you, on an adventure, along the fabulous Invisible Dragon !

I'm eight months and 110 pages in (I'm slow, but also a first-timer). Yesterday, I gave the majority of my novel a readthrough and saw that virtually all of my small, sharp paragraphs moved at a pretty rapid pace and were full of friendly (and not-so friendly) banter between characters in an attempt at levity, even during tense and emotional situations. :marseysoylentgrin:

I guess it sounded better in his head. :marseysmug2:

Tbh based on the full post it didn't sound that bad (just generic), but in a later comment OP posted a plot summary.

My novel is about a young girl in France during World War 1 who sneaks into trenches to aid soldiers as a Combat Medic... and who happens to weld the mystical healing power of Jeanne d'Arc's guantlet. It's just that she can be quite snarky and also has a friend whom she has excellent rapport with.

Just a quippy magical girl protagonist in the trenches of WW1. :soyquack: Maybe it works in context?

someone [can adapt] it into the next marvel movie 😆

I second finishing it, editing can fix a lot.

I'm an edit-holic; three hours of editing for every one hour of writing lol. So for the most part my chapters are looking extremely close to what their final version will be, witty banter and all. :marseysmoothbrain:

Frick, not the one draft guys again. :marseyeyeroll: Line by line polish does not replace the need for rewrites because you need to respond to structural problems. A one draft story, even with outline, is essentially a random walk and can lose track of tone, get bloated or distracted, just end up married to ideas that don't work, etc (this is all an issue in my fanfic submission btw :marseyseethe:). Making every scene "good" does not mean you have a good manuscript.

:marseysoylentgrin: Marvel movies have only made, what, twenty billion dollars? There's nothing bad about having a book with broad appeal.

The market's right behind me, isn't he? :marseyscared:

We don't write in a vacuum, and not everyone studies the classics. Our voices, methods, and priorities are influenced by what is in the air.

My literary influences are Marvel movies, isekai anime, and Bluey. :marseychonker2:

nothing wrong with writing marvel stuff a lot of my work was mostly inspired from anime I watched a mix of steins gate and jojo but the story still nothing alike. :marseyanime:

Is that a fricking Jojo ref- :marseybackstab:

As usual, the problems with /r/writing are structural rather than comment by comment (sounds familiar :marseysmug2:). In this case, the issue isn't whether quips are always bad. Rather, it's whether they work in context and whether they're appropriate for the story and setting. OP's setting likely meshes poorly with a wacky tone (and nobody seriously asked OP why the story suddenly felt bad to them, instead reassuring them that it's okay).

OP also gave away that they are not actually planning to do rewrites. So as usual, they came to the soyhaven to ask for affirmation about what they were already going to do. :marseysoylentgrinpat:

Edit: I forgot to make fun of them for "devistated" :marseybrainlet::marseylaugh:

Weekly “what are you reading” Thread # 18 :marseyreading:

To discuss your weekly readings of books, textbooks and papers.

I'm halfway through “The Remains of the Day”, chapter 4 to be more accurate. I watched the movie based on the book years ago and despite the good performances it doesn't do much justice to the story. The international conference in the book takes place in 1923, not in 1936 like in the movie and that makes Lord Darlington a more sympathetic character, at least until now, plus the American politician in the book is a complete butthole unlike the reasonable Christopher Reeves character in the movie, Darlington makes fair points about the Treaty of Versailles but I can see him turning to “appeasement” politics later on after the rise of nazism. Stevens is much more sensible character in the book as well to the point of being on the verge of tears during the conference dinner knowing his father was on his deathbed.

I am a Cat

I was wandering around the bookshop of [Notable Botanical Garden] and noticed they had a somewhat sizable Japanese section and in that section they had the famous novel I Am A Cat. I'd been wanting to read this book for a while and I'm almost done with volume one of Journey to the West and my flight back is long so I bought it.

I wasn't planning on reading much of the book today but I ended up locked outside the house and ended up reading around a third of it.

First and foremost, despite having a cute premise about a cat narrator this book is a difficult read. I have a pretty sizable vocabulary but I came across three words I didn't know. That cat himself speaks with a very high level vocabulary and perhaps because it's a translation the sentences don't flow as nicely as they could. Also I'll be real, I think most people would find the book dreadfully boring. Luckily I love books about people sitting around and talking so it's right up my alley.

I do like quite a few things about this book. The first and foremost is having a character just listening in on conversations while adding stuff in for the reader while not causing the flow of conversation to shift in universe. Secondly it's at least mildly humorous most of the time. Nothing laugh out loud hilarious but it's definitely got a good sense of humor to it. My favorite character so far is the guy who's the personification of that “me spreading misinformation on the internet” image.

Now, all my information on rakugo comes from the manga Akane Banashi (very good btw you should read it) but even my untrained eye could tell the massive influence the art form had on this book. Heck in chapter two I was like “hey this is just a variation on the Jugemu story” so if for some reason you are knowledgeable about rakugo then you'll probably find the use of its tropes endearing.

Anyways if you like books where people sit and talk then this is a book you should read.

A couple of days ago I was looking for new content on Youtube to listen to in the background while playing video games, and somehow stumbled onto this video:

I thought it was entertaining enough so I checked out the channel that uploaded it and watched a few more video of his. From appearance alone the guy seems obviously Jewish and he makes some anti-chud comments here and there, no surprise there. I think he complained about in a video about a 17th century Jewish mystic who wanted to overthrow the Ottoman Empire how if you google the mystic's name most results are just antisemitic schizoposts. Can't blame the guy. But one thing I nooticed is that he was using some, for the lack of a better term, """4chan-adjacent lingo""". Nothing inherently rightoid mind you, just stuff like making jokes about skipping leg day, calling something based, etc.

And just as I finished listening to one of his videos, he uploaded the newest video to his channel, this one:

So I thought to myself "Mishima's the sort of guy folks on /lit/ like to idolize and this guy uses some suspicious terminology, I guess I'll look him up on /lit/ archives and see what I get, wonder if he used to tripstrag there or something?"

And as it turns out, he used to run a cult back in high school and one of his cultists went on a shooting and he read the manifesto of the shooter on live TV, lmao.

https://warosu.org/lit/thread/20235784#p20240466

The back story on this guy is bizarre. First of all he's not jewish, he grew up in Mississippi and was involved in a school shooting. He had some type of cult called the Kroth in high school and one of the guys in it went nuts and killed his mom and two students https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_High_School_shooting.. Afterwards Sledge went on TV and read the most cringy note imaginable from the shooter https://www.wlbt.com/2021/06/17/making-mississippi-school-shooter scroll down to the Justin Sledge interview

From the Wikipedia article:

Sledge, who is now an academic specializing in philosophy and religion, argues that the media and police's claims that he was part of a satanic cult lacked evidence, exemplifying the broader Satanic Panic trend of the 1980s and 1990s.[18]

and the citation leads to his own website where he talks about his involvement (he denies any knowledge of any cults): https://www.justinsledge.com/faq

As a sidenote, looking him up on duckduckgo shows this as one of the results: https://www.keywiki.org/Justin_Sledge

I've never heard of this keywiki.org website, it looks like some kind of a rightoid website where they try to compile information on all leftoid activists? I'll look into it more later. It seems to be the same guy as this wiki article calls him "James "Justin" Sledge" and his Reddit account is /u/jamesjustinsledge and how many people with that name from Mississippi could there be? Also, another 4chan post, https://warosu.org/lit/thread/20235784#p20240799 seems to corroborate it by saying he was arrested in 2011 for leftoid shenanigans, although he makes no mention of it on his FAQ, even though he speaks of another arrest of his, from 2003, where he tried to make a home made machine-gun.

I also looked him up /x/ archives and there's some results, even a thread of someone claiming to be him ( https://archived.moe/x/thread/34779953 ) but since that's on /x/ it's not exactly something anyone should take seriously. One of the posts in that /x/ thread by the tripstrag claiming to be him repeats the same claim from the initial /lit/ post that he is not born ethnically Jewish but converted to it. I don't know where that comes from, and while double checking the FAQ of his, I noticed some interesting statements he made:

I disagree with your political and religious beliefs and/or hate your ethnic origin but I'm still learning from your content. What should I do?

Question why you hold such bigoted beliefs. Self-doubt is the first step on the journey to self-knowledge.

and

I hold white-supremacist and/or anti-semitic points of views and still find your content a resource - can I still contact you?

Sure, know that I find your views reprehensible but education and communication are among the best antidotes to bigotry, in my experience.

These seem surprisingly chud-sympathetic and make me wonder if, despite his claims to be a Marxist (in FAQ and elsewhere), he doesn't secretly hold some crypto-chud beliefs. All that being said, it's an entertaining channel, but I'm almost done with most videos there that interest me, what similar channels do you guys follow that you'd recommend and/or do you know anything more interesting about this guy? Is there a rdrama Jewish ping group I can ping to have you guys consult the Protocols of the Elders of Zion or whatever database you have of your own people to see if this guy is a convert or not?
