I’ve not seen Witch from Mercury myself, but I’ve heard it’s good.
If you want to get into Gundam then yeah I would recommend one of the standalone settings like the new one. You could also try Iron Blooded Orphans, 00, SEED, and/or Wing.
The longest running setting is Universal Century, which began way back in 1979. An OVA like 8th MS Team or The Origin is the best entry point there imo.

I watched the anime adaption of Tower of God and it's not particularly ... great. In fact, I wouldn't even call it good or anything but I have a huge mental block to give it a anything lower than a five/six. The reason for this is simple - it reminds me of the time when I was young and carefree and me and my friends thought this was the greatest webtoon in existence. Despite the asinine premise and the borderline nonsensical plot, I do feel like there is a certain underlying narrative I'll always find endearing. SIU is not a good writer (don't even get me started on the art) and the longer the series goes on, the more accurate this statement becomes but I do feel that - given a plethora of effort and polish - he could improve in such a way that the story doesn't become GODA levels of 'I-just-made-shit-up' as I like certain tropes in the story (e.g. the comedic relief character being smart, the hot but dumb heroine is hot and dumb because that's literally her raison d'etre) and if anyone says they saw the twist at the end of season one coming, they're lying. That shit was kino to a younger Losercel.
I also (finally) started a reread of The Ravages of Time and it's absolutely fantastic. Close enough to the original source to not upset hardcore trve fans but it also exhibits the right amount of artistic freedom to retell the classic story of the three kingdoms in a completely new light. I doubt it will ever be finished but if anyone is looking for a mature comic depicting ancient history, it is as good as it gets.

I doubt it, most of the recap 50 episodes in 3 hours are good for following rewatches. In my experience with Gundam, only the OG recap movies are worth it.
Wing is good because you want to watch Heero be an insane person, Duo fricking shit up, Relina wanting to get fricked by Heero, and a lot of trash mobile suits getting fricked up. I do think Wing gets better when the Mobile Doll program is introduced.

I don’t have high hopes for Wing because of what people have said about it, but the mobile suit designs look pretty good and I figure I might as well familiarize myself with something that a lot of Gundam fans clearly love. If nothing else, Tallgeese is one of my favorite designs in the franchise and I haven’t even seen it in action yet.
Meanwhile I made it about halfway through Victory before burning out, but it’s been a few months so I’ll get back into it. I’m patiently waiting for all the infamous character deaths to start. So far I’ve only seen a few of the Gun-EZ side characters die.

Designs are great, plot is a convoluted mess. Its a fun time if you want something with explosions.
Victory has the highest named character body count, I found the ending a little hard to get through as it'd be dead serious and then it'd be the kids fricking around for an episode. And I fricking hate Shakti. Designs are meh, F91 had better designs, I wish it got a proper series and not just one movie.
