I've been getting back into learning Japanese so I decided to speed run 200 words a day for 500 words then solidify those for about 5 days. after that I started the main Jlab beginner deck and I'm about halfway through so ive seen like half of the potential Japanese grammar so far. Gonna start some vns and light youtube watching after I finish. Not exactly anime related but wanted to share

That looks really cool, I'll have to check that out when it drops. I am waiting for yourteacher ai or the languagereactor chatbot to get better. Once you can rp/talk to a chatbot that has text to speech and voice to text it's over for normal learning imo. Even more over for Italki etc. Being able to hook my iems up to that via my phone while I take walks and shit would make me coom.

When learning Kanji for the first time, should I slow down progress by focusing on the Hiragana pronunciation when being presented with a new word, or should I just focus on memorizing the definition.

I'm like ~150 into the core 2k deck and have just been focusing on definition so far.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking about hiragana pronunciation. Of course you should learn the pronunciation and definition at the same time.

But I prefer to study vocab and kanji separately. The kanji you learn studying vocab lists like core 2k are kind of random. Dedicated kanji programs like wanikani, rtk, or kanji damage provide more logical routes. Like learning 一、二、三 in order is easier than learning 黒、白、赤 even though those are all related words, as well.

It's also just easier for me to learn a kanji when it's associatdd with a word I'm already comfortable using.

The idea of doing like 5 months of dedicated study where my comprehension of the language doesn't go up at all sounds super depressing. I am pretty confident I can speedrun 2000 words of full kanji readings plus all main grammar points within like 2 months and at that point I should already be good to start just enjoying youtube.

You will regret not learning kanji if you want to actually get good and it's a lot easier than you would think. The best anki decks imo are WaniKani Ultimate for kanji/vocab, https://jisho.org JLPT N5-N1 for pure vocab (do them after core 2k since those are more beginner friendly and just skip the repeat words), and Jtest4you grammar N5 - N1. Jtest has occasional errors throughout and doesn't explain much, but it covers A LOT of practical stuff that Jlab / Tae Kim / genki I&II don't and has a billion example sentences.

I am specifically avoiding Core-2k6k, I used it for a while(saw 500 words matured like 200) in like 2021 and thought it was awful. The 2 Jlab intermediate decks are available on https://kemono.su/patreon/user/77362408 so after I get core 1k vocab and 90% of grammar from the beginner deck I will probably just go for those for another like 1.5k vocab. They are set up in a way that follows an episode of anime or drama and seem pretty neat similar to that olly cute twinks storylearning stuff I think. I have like negative interest in rrtk/wanikani or really any kanji drilling at all. I am mainly doing this as preparation for youtube since that is how I learned English effortlessly as like an 8y/o.
