I like One Punch Man, but there's a lot of inside humor because it makes fun of so many anime tropes.

I'd start with movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Then you'll be disappointed with the lower quality production of every anime afterward.

Attack on Titan is really good. Just ignore the fanbase and its sneeders (as with every anime).

Appleseed, the one from the late 80s or early 90s is good. They had a sequel I think in the early 2000s that uses that CGI, which is okay.

Knights of Sidonia is a really cool sci-fi.

If you want a short film, there's Memories, which is a collection of short films. It's the second one about space garbage collectors which is great.

There's another short film about these guys who recover nuclear weapons in a post-apocalyptic world. There's this robot they fight called GONK, I think. The battle scene is excellent. !anime, search results are such shit, so please help a neighbor out.

akira is overrated , Appleseed and ghost in the shell definitely aren't beginner friendly.

I guess watch Demon Slayer or Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood? @azurewaves

One punch is fine, Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong is what I'd suggest to a normal person with limited anime exposure.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

agreed on tatami galaxy sure, but ping pong? really? not saying its a bad anime or anything, but i dont see anyone new to anime watching that and sticking to it for more than half the first episode

the problem with these lists is that theyre often made by people who have watched a decent amount of anime and they try to think out of all the things theyve seen what would be the best anime that everyone agrees is a "classic" for newbies to watch, when in reality, the average newcomer to anime would probably have the most fun watching some pure slop like sword art online

I recently rewatched Ping Pong with my normie friend. Before the first sitting he said he could do one episode and then he'd have to go to bed. We got through 5 that night. Actual 10/10 series.

IMO Ping Pong would have far more appeal to a normal person from the story it's telling, since it's so grounded as a sports anime. While still being very ANIME (aka actually visually interesting to look at) while not having any elements that'd make it creepy or otherwise put off a normal person.

Sloppa you mention I think has more appeal to people who are degen, I think I'm coming at it more from, "what would you recommend to your totally normal roomate who is into movies or to your mom who only watches TV dramas like NCIS" then "what would you recomend to your little brother with ADHD or your neurodivergent comic book geek friend"

Cowboy Bebop. Good english dub, decent slow burn, amazing soundtrack, just solid overall.

If you want more action and "magic", Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is a loved classic for a reason.

One Punch Man is actually not a bad show to start with, especially with marvel capeshit flooding western markets making its parody relevant and relatable. A good number of parodied tropes may be missed though.

Mushishi is a very slow burn but its great. Each episode feels like a foreign folk tale from centuries ago come to life, and while character design suffers the storytelling is great and so is the background artwork.

For a modern work thats great, Sousou No Frieren is good, about a long lived elf who realizes she needs to learn to connect with people and enjoy living rather than taking time for granted since she has so much of it.

Violet Evergarden is beautifully animated and can hit the loner/neurodivergent in the feels as its about a near robotic emotionless person trying to learn how to connect with people through writing.

Obligatory: if you can find someone who loves politics and long, discussion based shows, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (the original 80s/90s version) is the unironic greatest show ever produced. Literally fascism vs democracy, with no good guys or bad guys, no moralizing, just a story that makes you think of the virtues and failures of political systems. Its very long, very old, very slow, but it is truly kino

Interesting my brother's favorite anime of all time is Legend of the Galactic Heros.

Its really really good, but because of subject matter its also not for everyone. Monster is similar in terms of pacing and tone (dialogue heavy), featuring a doctor who saved the life of a child who grew up to be a "monster" that creates crime by introducing would-be criminals to motives and motivation. The doctor ends up on the run when the kid kills his medical rivals leading to police believing he committed the crime. He tries to evade police and find the kid to kill him after realizing the monster he saved and unleashed onto the world.

Its a slow burn, really slow, but its a good show. The last arc fricking sucks though, it should have ended around episode 54.

Recommend Gundam

 :marseyfreedomgundam:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If we're talking strictly about the original Gundam setting, "Universal Century", I'd recommend these:

The original Gundam series from 1979.

Gundam Zeta

Gundam ZZ

Char's Counterattack (movie)

The original trilogy ("but there's four that's not what the term trilogy means :soycry: " shut the frick up) of Gundam. The bare essentials. Some say you can skip ZZ and go straight to CCA, but those people are r-slurred and should be ignored.

War in the Pocket

A short standalone six episodes series set during the original series. Can be watched independently, but spoils the ending of the original series. Probably the single most recommended series.

Stardust Memory

A shorter series that takes place between the original series and Zeta, but made years later and intended to be watched after Zeta. Anyone who tells you to watch Gundam chronologically is r-slurred and should be ignored. Don't watch before Zeta.

Gundam Unicorn

Char's counterattack is generally seen as the finale of the original Gundam storyline with Rey and Amuro, and Unicorn is a fanservicey extra. Takes place a few decades later, ties up some additional loose ends, and is basically meant the be proper end.

Gundam: The Origin

The Origin is the prequel to the original series that shows the backstories of many of the original characters, their childhoods, how they got to where they are, what happened for the events of the original series to happen, etc. It's a fanservice series for people who really like the setting and the characters. No point in watching if you haven't seen at least the original series.

Things are a lot more complex than this when you start including "late UC" setting like F91 and Victory (my personal favorite), but I tried to keep it simple. then there's a billion alternate universe Gundam series (almost all of which are bad), which basically only share one thing in common with these is that they have giant robots named Gundams but nothing else, and then there's also Turn A Gundam (my second favorite series) which is simultaneously a sequel to every single Gundam series, and Gundam Reconguista in G, which is either a sequel or a prequel to Turn A Gundam (conflicting information).

If you want to watch alternative universe Gundams, the best ones (and by best ones I mean my personal favorites) are Mobile Fighter G Gundam (martial arts tournament where people fight using Gundams) and After War Gundam X (a "what if" story where there was a war similar to the original Gundam series but no one won it, the world was basically destroyed and it's a post-apocalyptic setting).

There's also a few shows that take place during the original series like MS-IGLOO, 8th MS Team, but most of these are pretty bad and not really worth watching unless you're really desperate for more Gundam content. Only one of these I really liked is Thunderbolt. All of them are better than modern AU slop like Iron Blooded Orphans, at least.
