The fan favourite character got killed off screen for shock value, while even the weakest survived sure-kill attacks. Then the author stretched the final villain fight for too long and then abruptly got told by the editors to wrap up the manga in two months.

Who knows, most people can only guess. Inner workings of Jump are described in the Bakuman, the editors are supposed to steer the manga in the direction it can run the most, but also make the unprofitable one come to the conclusion on short notice. Maybe they were getting into the Sorachi situation or Gege wanted to end the manga this arc, but couldn't write a satisfactory ending anyway.
