Reddit has a feature where people aren't sent a "You were banned from subredditxyz" message unless they had participated in subredditxyz. If they see the message, they participated.

Every single week I field a "Why did you ban me? I never participated here" modmail, responding to their ban msg

Half of them forgot they posted or commented. Half of them had deleted their post or comment to try to cover their tracks, to try to harass mods.
