I've released an update to Skythread with a new feature π It lets you load subthreads that were hidden because of a "nuclear block". Look for orange links like on the screenshot - the first time you click it, you'll get a warning like here, asking if you want to keep seeing those. #atdev
Kuba Suder π΅π±πΊπ¦ (@mackuba.eu):
It works by looking up a list of replies (as URIs) in my own database, and then loads the actual post content from the AppView.
Limitations:
I'm only keeping ~3 months worth of posts, so it won't work in old threads
it won't load replies that were deleted or where the account is deactivated
Tony Wong (@thevballdude.bsky.social):
Are the limitations there to keep costs down?
Kuba Suder π΅π±πΊπ¦ (@mackuba.eu):
The first part yeah - 3+ months of posts is something like 80-90 GB of data, I have a 160GB VPS now and I want to leave some free space.
Second part because I just don't want to store deleted posts, and don't want to accidentally show e.g. content that they've taken down because it breaks ToS etc.
Tony Wong (@thevballdude.bsky.social):
Is there a way to do it without storing posts yourself? I thought services like this worked by simply ignoring flags.
As for deleted posts, I can see why you don't want to show user-deleted posts, but I think you can show content they've taken down (except if it's illegal of course).
Tony Wong (@thevballdude.bsky.social):
Back on Reddit, I found services like Ceddit and Removeddit to be quite useful (although I believe they're mostly neutered by API changes)
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
Yep. They were wrappers around PushShift, & PushShift now requires credentials & authentication
Tony Wong (@thevballdude.bsky.social):
I think Reddit admins were mostly concerned about AI scraping and user privacy (from displaying user-deleted posts). Everyone knows that sometimes mods remove stuff for silly reasons, and I enjoyed being able to bypass that if I wished
