Asuka's Anti-Transphobia Field (@asukafield.bsky.social):
Hello BlueSky! My name is Asuka. I am a trans woman concerned with transphobia on this app. In spite of my better judgement, I have decided to start a labeler for transphobia because it is an issue that is not being addressed enough.
This is a solo operation intended to stay limited in scope.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
Hi. Here is my criticism of your proposal:
Labelers exist to allow shared responsibility and effort on administering a "bucket" or set of "buckets". They provide a shared inbox and ticket resolution system. That is their distinguishing characteristic from a standard blocklist.
Asuka's Anti-Transphobia Field (@asukafield.bsky.social):
Hi Penny. I agree! I am not a fan of blocklists but I know that people do want them so I want to provide the option. In the future, expanding to a larger team is a possibility, but at the present moment it does not make sense to attempt to put together a team on a limited scale of work.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
If you keep open building a team, a labeling service makes sense.
If you do build a team, my advice is:
Ownership / direction
⬇️
Policy
⬇️
Lever-pullers
You, as owner, shouldn't pull levers, and lever-pullers (reports processors) shouldn't set policy or have more agency than necessary.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
Policy writers shouldn't set direction or pull levers.
By "lever puller", I mean the people closing tickets, & they should be asking themselves the same simple yes/no question on each report for a given violation type.
Like, "does this express a transphobic slur?".
It will lower burnout & stress

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
If your operation is going to be a solo effort, you can save the expense of running the labeler system, and just maintain a userlist. Or several userlists.
Doing so will also save bandwidth on labels, which have a current arbitrary limit of ~10 on an account.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
The tradeoff is that you'd need people to DM you links to posts they're reporting, rather than use the built in report flow.
Asuka's Anti-Transphobia Field (@asukafield.bsky.social):
That is a major tradeoff for me which would greatly diminish usability in my eyes.

This sounds like a criticism of the chosen implementation, rather than the outcome. It does not seem appropriate to complain about it if you're not funding the labeler.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
I'm not complaining. Good faith criticism is advice and wisdom. I apologise for the dry, flat tone my criticism was couched in; Old Habits, etc.
Asuka's Anti-Transphobia Field (@asukafield.xyz):
I did not read it as a complaint! I understand everyone has strong feelings about labelers right now anyway.
