At the time, academic understanding of and awareness of transgender existence was suppressed by evolution denialist, cisheteronormative experts who imposed their own views and values on therapy, instead of affirmative and supportive therapy. It was also suppressed by the fact that Christian bigots harassed and were violent towards LGBT people, and by the fact that science about trans people was destroyed by the Nazis in the 1930's.

I grew up in a culture that literally did to me what The Matrix does to humans in the movie, The Matrix — treat people who don't fit in to the prescribed ontology as enemies and glitches to be eliminated.

Whether a trans kid needs or doesn't need therapy, of any kind, is a decision that is best handled by people who have a fiduciary duty to that child — parents, guardians, judges, doctors — with the understanding that the child owns their life, and has the right to medical care.

To get drug intervention, minors have to go through an average of three years of continuous therapy beforehand. Often it involves the therapy being cleared by the order of a judge. Those therapies are reversible puberty blockers — that then put the child through, on average, 2.5 years more of waiting.

Finally — this discussion about whether or not medical therapies for trans children are or are not appropriate, isn't something that is properly a question for debate by the general public —

Accepting it as appropriate for public debate simply accepts the premises of anti-LGBTQ bigots, who want medical decisions made by law and politicians, instead of science and doctors.
