The simple answer is:
The people who were "protesting" "change", "censorship", and so forth and so on when Ellen Pao was CEO, were not actually protesting change nor censorship.
What they were doing was throwing a series of giant racist, sexist tantrums because an educated Asian woman who is a feminist was CEO. They weren't protesting censorship or free speech; they were taking revenge on a figurehead scapegoat.
The people who were "protesting" (rioting) wanted to be allowed to harass minorities, women, and carry out criminal enterprises via this website. When they were stopped from doing so, they threw tantrums.
