The second worst set-back for the cause of free speech has been when people who legitimately care about free speech civil liberties support the causes of this first group of people whenever their calls for "free speech" temporarily happen to align with liberating speech instead of suppressing it

For the cause of free speech, one of the worst things ever to happen was getting co-opted by people who use the term to mean "promote speech I like, suppress speech I don't," and act on that position in blatant ways but still manage to get it called "free speech."

What a setback.
