Do you ever stop and think about how weird life is

Becca the Comma-Splice Slayer (@beccadax.com):

How'd the one lead to the other?

Night of the Living Abigail (@popeguilty.bsky.social):

-Ron Paul runs for President in 2008

-Libertarian posters on Something Awful will NOT shut up about it and the Laissez Faire subforum is created to contain them

-LF is so rapidly overtaken by people going there to yell at the Libertarians that it becomes a subforum for left-wing shitposting

Night of the Living Abigail (@popeguilty.bsky.social):

-There's an LF thread about how terrible Reddit is (which also leads to another moment in my life where I helped coerce Reddit admins into banning CSAM, which they didn't wanna do, but that's another story)

Ms. Penny ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿง™โ™€๏ธ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

The common narrative at the time amongst people who didn't want to know the specifics was that Reddit was told by lawyers, "Probable Losing Lawsuit". Which was a lie.

They didn't wanna b/c they employed a bunch of "free speech" types who also enjoyed terabytes of archived content of dubious etc;

Ms. Penny ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿง™โ™€๏ธ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

They didn't want to change the TOS / Content Policy unless all their competitors did so too. Then spez, on stepping back into his role as CEO, made a change to the TOS via the Content Policy & made anything resembling CSAM prohibited. B/c they realised who VA was trying to hand /r/jailbait to.

Yeah 100%

The admins were good buddies with and big fans of Michael "violentacrez" Brutsch. They recognized him for the work he did, and liked him as a person. Adrian Chen forced them to disavow him and they were furious at the time.

Ms. Penny ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿง™โ™€๏ธ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

They didn't have a problem with /r/jailbait before VA tried to hand it off to a specific group, which group should have been hunted down and jailed by interpol long ago

Ms. Penny ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿง™โ™€๏ธ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

If I had known then what they actually did, I would not have stayed using Reddit nor tried to save it from being a heck

This is a bit of behind the scenesery I haven't heard! When we wrote the redditbomb copypasta we were mostly frustrated that the specific removal of /r/jailbait hadn't put a stop to the CSAM being shared and admins were still condoning it

Ms. Penny ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿง™โ™€๏ธ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

They wouldn't, because it wasn't written into TOS / Content Policy at the time, b/c at that point the only images they natively hosted were CSS spritesheets & banners & icons. Their position was that b/c they blackholed i.e. motherless, that was the limit of their duty.

Uggghhhh it makes me angry
