Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al (Official Video)

Mop Bucket (@mopbucket.bsky.social):

My understanding was that the reason the video is like this is that Paul Simon loathed music videos, just as Graceland was a hate letter to the US music industry.

No doubt it's not as simple as that, if it's true at all, but I kind of want to believe so

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

You say "Graceland was a hate letter" but I must object; ain't nothin' hateful about what Alison Krauss & Jerry Douglas floated into the world that night

This is a good dissection of the scam! I'll also note a few telltales of the account itself (bsky.app/profile/paul...) that shows you it's a scammer:

1. The icon, banner image, and image in the first post are all the same.

2. The only top level posts are image posts, and they all have the same pose.

taco socialist (@draggedbygoats.bsky.social):

Hi Rahaeli, I assume the reason for #1 is to scale mass account creation programmatically? And if that's the case, that also seems like it can be addressed on bluesky's end programmatically?

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

Not Rah, but did some spam spotting on Reddit -

#1 is useful as one signal, but once the admins start actioning accounts algorithmically with a bias towards a given signal, the scammers shift; they're constantly A/B testing to find configs that don't get (immediately) clocked

taco socialist (@draggedbygoats.bsky.social):

Ahh, right! Jeez, I even have an associates in cyber-security, you'd think I would've clocked that! πŸ˜•

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

Rah can write about this set of signals openly b/c they're all either something the scammers will inevitably change, or something they absolutely can't change (they invariably have to have a human pfp!)

They'll also find a config within normal bluesky new user patterns, eventually

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

This type of mini explainer helps people firm up their own skills in spotting the bot

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

Yeah, the issue with automated detection is the people behind this kind of thing are constantly iterating the kind of thing that automation can detect. Sometimes you see multiple parameter shifts a day in a particular network!

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

That's another reason why service providers sometimes seem to "not effectively or swiftly kick the spammers / scammers out" - the T&S department can be waiting for the bad actors to show all they can do, & then boot them in one big batch. @piratesoftware.live discussed that approach on stream

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

It keeps the bad actors from figuring out what gave them away, while letting them fingerprint themselves

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

Yeah, and letting an account age in place is sometimes effective because a lot of these networks have learned that there's a time-based element to detection: they make the account, let it age for 7 or 30 days or whatever, and then come back and activate it and do the suspicious stuff.

Adam noHorns (@papazit.bsky.social):

is there a way to shift it? so the scammers chase instead of security reacting? i guess im asking can banks get ahead of bank robbers or something similarly dumb

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

If someone figures it out they'll make billions. We've been looking for decades

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

In a way, the scammers are "chasing" "typical new user / established user appearance and behaviour" and that's their main, inescapable weakness. They only get profit by finding the one mark in ten thousand, before anti-abuse shuts them down, so they have to have lots of accounts.

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

Yeah. There's no downside to them to flooding the zone with shit because they just have to get one thing past detection to score, but also there are some things they do that are inherently very unlike actual user behavior so there's stuff you can detect on. (And I don't talk about those!)

Is there any risk that these onions might be floating around in grocery stores?

Pookleblinky (@pookleblinky.bsky.social):

Probably not, remember how in 2020 there was a whole thing about how restaurants had a whole parallel supply chain.

Supermarkets would have their own single point of contamination that ends up affecting every single store

You know what's broadly abused?

Congressional immunity to prosecution w/r/t official actions they take in the course of their office

Like hiring people to overthrow the Constitution

CNN (@cnn.com):

House Republicans on the committee with broad jurisdiction over national elections have hired at least two ex-Trump campaign officials involved in the 2020 fake electors scheme as the GOP-led panel gears up to take center stage in an unknown post-election landscape when Congress returns in November.

Illuminostro (@geetnerd.bsky.social):

Agreed, this needs to be changed. DAs, prosecutors, SCOTUS justices. Obvious, blatant, and provable malfeasance should have severe consequences. They there is for every officer below SCOTUS, but prosecution is very, very rare. Witness recent executions of proven innocents.

Illuminostro (@geetnerd.bsky.social):

Because authority doesn't want to be embarrassed, or their authority besmirched.

Even one of the prosecutors of the Mendez case still says "It was all bullshit, they're guilty!" Yeah, they killed, but the second case excluded tons of testimony.

Illuminostro (@geetnerd.bsky.social):

My father never sexually abused me, but he slapped me around, destroyed my confidence and spirit, and I was absolutely terrified to the point of never approaching police about it. And in the early to mid 80's, they wouldn't have done anything, anyway. "Suck it up, you must have done something."

Illuminostro (@geetnerd.bsky.social):

It's not like they were Bundy, or Gacy. They didn't kill dozens of people for fun. If they did it for financial gain, why did the one brother confess?

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

My only knowledge of their case is television news coverage from their trial!

Illuminostro (@geetnerd.bsky.social):

The first trial ended with a hung jury. The second trial had such severe restrictions from the judge, it was obvious he wanted a guilty verdict.

Like I said, they did it, they confessed. But there was no indication they wanted to kill anyone else. It's been a long time. Give another look.

I think I've blocked literally hundreds of people in the last couple of days. Incel g*mer chuds, right wing freaks, scammers, alt-lefty wankers, tone policing jackasses... they all go on the block list of course.

They're all the same to me right now, because they all want the same thing: to harm.

Aaron Sofaer ✍️ 🏳️🌈 (@aaronsofaer.bsky.social):

"but they do it from a position of--"

I don't give a shit. Really genuinely do not care right now about their motivations. They have no better future which they imagine creating by their deeds; they want only the result of a worse world where they feel more righteous.

Log the frick off.

Ms. Penny πŸŒ…πŸ§™β™€οΈ Oaken (@skywitches.net):

Weighing their motivations is a trap.

The only thing that matters is that they're proselytising, hawking wares unsolicited, directing abuse, etc

Mmm. This is wisdom, indeed. It's just hard for me to ... to accept not being able to understand things, I guess, on like a "what are the reasons for this" I'm-a-nerd way. But that's pointless, it would be injurious to gain that understanding.
