a critical number of non-college educated voters have responded to the precarity of the modern economic order by embracing values of entrepreneurism and individual "hustle" that trump reflects back to them in an outsized, entertaining and ultimately compelling way.

because the democratic party is no longer grounded in any particular set of movements or any kind of discrete community, it missed this development and does not have a way to respond to it. there is no democratic story to tell here.

but this problem is completely distinct from "democrats are elitists." what this problem is that democrats are speaking the language of a politics and political order that no longer exists. most republicans are doing the same, for that matter.

trump's unique advantage is that he literally comes out of — and to some extent helped build — the cultural environment that has produced the stories that these voters find compelling.

in addition, by virtue of having a kind of blue collar affect himself, trump's very presence enhances the esteem of identities that are associated with hard work and americanism. supporting trump can then become a way to enhance your own sense of status or even to assimilate into the mainstream.

the challenge is building out an alternative cultural story that connects prosperity to solidarity and democracy. that convinces people that you can be a success without climbing over others. i don't know where that will come from! i think it is something that you'll ultimately have to find.
