Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):
I said on the podcast yesterday that I don't think "disinformation" had that big an impact on the election. What did was a huge portion of the populace just ignoring all news because there's just too much, and it's too much work to figure out what's legit. This seems to agree...
Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):
A lot of people responding to this and I should clarify (may write up something bigger later). 1. Yes the point of disinfo is to flood the zone with shit and that absolutely has turned off many people to learning the truth.
Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):
2. Yes, lots of Trump voters believe absolute nonsense peddled to them by Fox, Sinclair, and others. But if we're looking at the marginal voters who really decide the election, I'm not seeing evidence they "fell" for anything. It looks like they just didn't like the price of groceries.
Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):
So yes the large failed media ecosystem matters. A lot. I'm just saying that the response to this has to be different than "fight the disinfo" with fact checks and stuff.
Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):
Too many people yelling at me about things I am not saying here. I'll say that's on me but I'm in no mood to argue so I'm muting this thread and will not look at further responses.

If someone could fix THIS problem with social media, we'd all appreciate it. (Problem = people who give the least generous read of a 300 character post, get mad and/or nasty, and then twist it to fit their pet argument.)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Unfortunately this is part of human nature & is why we have attorneys & courts, to resolve differences of view.
Which is to say, there's a solution and it's not a tech solution
Abyssal Doomrock (@deathbymeteor.bsky.social):
But it's hard to jam screwdrivers into millions or billions of noggins to try and unlock some common sense (plus it's really really messy)
