For humans, having a sense of purpose & belonging, & feeling emotions, are extremely important. Sometimes the only purpose & belonging they know or see are bad purposes & horrible groups. Sometimes the only emotions they can feel are negative.

They don't enjoy it, but it makes them feel.

Well said and that I completely get. I do a lot of work related to these themes as a coach and facilitator.

I just wonder, don't you get tired after a while of feeling bad all the time? Anger doesn't FEEL good.

And why chase after people who want nothing to do with you?

And why waste energy?
