Regarding account verification, there used to be this method for verifying email certificates using "notaries" to verify people's identities. I don't know if Blue Sky will hire people to "issue checkmarks," but if not something like that might work.

Domain verification works in some cases (.gov, .edu, prominent people) but otherwise you have the same problem: how do you know a domain is really that person? Anyway, digital identity is difficult.

You can ping the WHOIS for details about the owner.

This is the way surely. Its how the internet was built. Noone can prove I'm not a dog and that's the way it's always been regardless of "trusted" third parties.
