I learned as a child that I could easily perceive sociopaths — usually because I was "in the room with them" when they went mask off — and almost no one else could / would perceive them.

Indeed, they gain access to victims because people don't perceive / acknowledge the danger.

One of the Boy Scouts I was in a troop with was the son of a Scouting employee - & he would torture small animals, branded other Scouts with burning branches, built a cult of personality, & was a textbook sociopath. No one listened to me raise the alarm, or heeded the incidents.

At age 17 he murdered a Pakistani immigrant working overnight at a convenience store, over $20.

In prison he "found Christ", & got early release — moving to Idaho, & joining the Aryan Nations.

This person was directly and closely personally interviewed / perceived by multiple professionals whose job it is to identify threats, who have a duty to report & act, whose professional duty is to counter & prevent recidivist criminal behaviour & escalation of violent extremist behaviour.

When vast swathes of the population - even with training and proof - can't see the danger, we cannot go about blaming the people who have been victimised and are now undertaking extraordinary effort to make inroads to address the problem.
