Every day I use social media platforms since 1994 is a day I remember that we all deserve communications platforms where the sysops can't snoop on us.

In 1994 I was on a MUSH — a MultiUser SHared experience, a kind of chat server with user trigger & automation scripting — where I was exploring my gender & sexuality.

One of the sysops turned off all my incoming DMs & echoed a private conversation I was having, to the entire server.

We all assume "the sysops are too busy / disinterested to snoop or pull shenanigans" but the truth is that we wouldn't know until the damage is done.

Which is why we all deserve comms platforms that lock them out of snooping.

On all platforms lacking that privacy, any company or service or infrastructure that handles our data, we should be regularly demanding of the CEO, CTO, & CIO what they're doing to ensure privacy & security of our data, beyond "we use 2FA for users & employees".
