You absolutely should be willing to put in work to care for a ferret. We got really lucky with my business (that's what a group of ferrets is called!) and they are all well-behaved, but we wouldn't have been able to do it without me being able to work from home most of the time.
We also live in a loft, so we can keep our eyes on them, but it would be harder with a standalone house.
Sorry for the essay. You are right to be wary! It is always best for all involved to treat living things with respect and to acknowledge that they require lots of work and attention!

after high school i lived in a house that had one of these lil guys and she was pretty cute but she smelled.
she would steal lighters and hide them in the underside of the couch. once a month or so we would pick up the couch and flip it over and 25+ lighters would come falling out.
Ours are very well-behaved, but we got lucky. They are all litter-box-trained, but they still poop under my desk every so often. They require a lot of attention and love to play. If you have the ability to put in the time, it'll pay off. I'm biased, though.

I love weasels but they don't seem very nice to own
Caging things seems mean but I don't think free range weasels are the best idea

Yes, they will scratch up anything that smells like leather. We have to hide our shoes.
I've seen some videos of ferrets doing tricks but mine just attack my hand and drag it under the sink.
