Probably the most seethe I caused with a single comment on Reddit was someone posted a similar picture and I commented, not even trolling, that they must be extra dumb birds bc my cats always eat them too.

I thought people liked cats online. Well Reddit informed me that it's bad to have an outdoor cat. I informed them that it's cruel to keep a cat inside and they let me know I was correct with downmarseys

Well the unfortunate truth is that free-roaming domestic cats are responsible for billions of bird deaths a year and have directly contributed to to dozens of birds going extinct. https://abcbirds.org/program/cats-indoors/cats-and-birds

https://worldanimalfoundation.org/advocate/how-many-birds-do-cats-kill

Also indoor cats live significantly longer on average.

That said when I had a cat I let him outside supervised in the backyard like with my dog and trained him to stay in the yard. Feral cats are generally a much larger issue than indoor/outdoor cats to the birds dying off and contributing to the overall halocene extinction that were in the midst of.

You don't let your cat outside because you're worried about local bird populations. I don't let my cat outside because I'm an overprotective worrywart who would not be able to handle the risk of her being hit by a car or attacked by a dog or something. We are not the same.

Nah, that was a big part of mt calculus too. My first cat got hit by a car. Several years later i got another cat and decided he could only be outside supervised in his yard. He died of lukemia tho :marseytears:

Maybe because its true? You do you man. Overall one person wont make a difference, butt if you wonder why there arent as many bugs and flowers as 10 years ago, thats a big reason why. https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2022/02/24/1082752634/the-insect-crisis-oliver-milman

Its called a trophic cascade. Poor public policy choices like not discouraging people from letting their cats kill birds and other small wild animals can have serious far reaching consequences. Look what happened in communist China when they decided to kill off a bunch of their birds and small animals. 100 million people starved to death. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Pests_campaign

Butt I understand that for some, the ends justify the means

My cats are employees and I write off their food as wages for pest control at work. lol this is pretty much how I ended up with the most downmarseys with one comment chain

Again, one person wont make a huge difference and if youre using them for responsible pest control then good on you. I even hear the irs will let you deduct the cats expenses if its a work cat. Im jist saying that the idea of generally not having cats roam free is a reasonable one. Its like, most hunters agree that there should be some limits on how much game you can kill and when you can kill it. Our ecological situation is very unstable and sad looking right now.
