hoe are ferrets as pets? I heard they stink worse than dogs and cats

So they can smell REALLY bad if they're still with their scent glands. However, we got our ferrets from the pet store and they had their scent glands removed before they were put up for sale. I feel badly about that.

So our ferrets have a musk, but it is relegated to their bedding which we wash weekly. And their litter is cleaned twice a day, so that gets ahead of any stink there.

All that being said, they are pretty high maintenance for "small" pets, in my opinion, as they need four hours or more of hands-on play every day. And you need to be good about cleaning, or else yes, the smell would be pretty bad. And ferrets deserve clean houses too!
