In the early 1980s A: and B: were reserved for the two floppy drives it was assumed you would have. Early on it was assumed that you would have just the one A: floppy drive. If you were rich you would have a B: that was an additional floppy drive. C: was if you were really rich and had a hard drive. Hence that being the default today.
