Military really fricked up by taking away retirement for anyone who joined after 2018.

It's no longer 20 years gets you half your salary. They're doing this gay butt 401k that's basically the same as the TSP and they can't draw until turning 60.

I've known a lot of dudes at their 10 year mark want to say frick it and get out, but they re enlist cause they're halfway there. Not gonna have that anymore.

Now it'll just be people who literally can't do anything on the outside. Anybody with a decent work ethic and minimal skillset will get out.

Well that's just straight up wrong. It's still 20 under BRS. Now for reserve retirement it's true that you can't draw it until you're 60 buts that's nothing new.

My bad, you don't get the full amount until 60something right?

Tbh you might be right about that. I think I remember you could opt to get a lump sum of 50% right away and smaller monthly payments later or take your full payments just like normal. When they gave those briefs I always tuned out because I was grandfathered in and had no interest in switching by that point.

I tried asking some of the young cats a few months ago and he had no idea lol.

Don't know anybody who opted in. Shit deal.

Yeah idk why anyone would take it over the old system if they had the choice. It's the same with the GI bill. We had the option to take the old Montgomery GI bill or the Post-911 but idk why in God's name anyone would choose the old one over the new lol

jfc the military started TSP?

I knew a retired marine O6 who went to work for Booze Allen making 160+, on top of his military retirement and free healthcare, you'd be r-slurred to turn that down for McDonald's back in the day

Military's had the TSP, the new system is called the blended retirement system, this is in addition to the TSP.

I don't know the full details, like you get a kicker at your 15 year mark, but I do know you can't draw until 60.

You don't really want to enter the workforce at 40ish years old with just your military experience and expect to get a salary compared to what you were getting from the military. Basepay+housing allowance+cost of living allowence+food allowence+ free healthcare. Not including extra pay for deployments a E6 is making low 6 figures in total compensation.

I knew an AF dude who made E8 and then got into officer school. He even pulled it off when they were doing callbacks for pilots. I know they won't drop your pay, but I do wonder how he's gonna make out for cash. I think he has to start paying for his own uniforms and other stuff.

He'll be fine since he joined prior to 2018, he's grandfathered in.

When you commission (go officer), from enlisted if you have 4 years of service, there's a special pay grade for O-1/2/3s, so that dude when commissioned would be a 2nd LT with a pay grade of O-1E which is paid more than a regular O-1, freshly commissioned straight outta college.

That's awesome. His new duty station calls him Master Lieutenant.
