For all the cries of genocide it seems the colonizers did a really shitty job of it.

Catholics weakness. They try to convert people instead of just crusading them :marseycrusader2:

There still was a genocide. Native Indian culture was purposefully erased. Children were taken from their families to prevent them from growing up as a Native Indian.

If attempting total cultural erasure and assimilation is not genocide then what is?

The definitions of genocide are actually quite strict. An attempt to destroy a culture is not considered genocide by the UN, unless accompanied by a proven intent to physically destroy the group. Demonstrating the proven intent part is very difficult btw, and is one reason manufactured famine is a popular way of committing genocide (it's much easier to deny intent than if you just shot everyone).

In any event, I really wouldn't get too hung up on terminology. Something wrong is wrong regardless of whether it fits a particular definition.

Apparently it's not genocide enough, because everyone cares enough about these alleged graves so much.

Killing them?

Genocide does not have to just be the attempted killing of a people it can be the erasure of their culture. Though Native Indians in Canada were killed off just as Native Indians were killed off in all of the Americas by colonizers.

How can genocide not include the erasure of culture?

Is the forceful assimilation of people and the eradication of native ways not erasure of culture and this genocide?

You still didn't explain how it isn't. Groups of people have been historically targeted for genocide because of their culture.
