The interview he did with Bishop Barron includes his conversion story in detail. He was at a low point in his life, seeking to change his ways and find guidance. Playing Padre Pio was just the impetus to actually read the Gospels and learn about Catholicism.

Most Americans don't get exposed to Catholicism except through anti Catholic news articles and Hollywood depictions. I imagine it's very different there.
