Why do Catholics simp for Mother Mary so hard? :marseyshapiro:

What significance does she have? Why do you all pray to her? It seems a little blasphemous to me. All she did was not let Joseph nut in her and give birth to Jesus.

I'd simp for Mary Magdalene before Mother Mary

Within Catholic cannon there is a categorization for divinity, unfortunately i cant remember the name, that is used to show how close to God something is. The bottom level is Saints and Popes, the next level is Mary, and the top level is God. Effectively when God gave Mary Jesus it was him making her into a Saint of higher proportions. The reason for Catholic prayer to the Saints and Mary comes down to the idea that Saints and Mary are in some sense a part of Divinity. This does not mean they are apart of God, only that they have become apart of his Divinity.

Latria = worship (sacrifice, in this case the one and eternal sacrifice of Christ which is re-presented through the Mass and participated in by the faithful through the Blessed Sacrament) :marseyandjesus:

Hyperdulia = honor (not worship) given to the highest member of creation, the Ark of the New Covenant and the Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary :marseyimmaculate::marseykneel:

Protodulia = not a term used very often but a few theologians have tried to give St. Joseph his own designation, I have no opinion on it lol :marseyfatherjoseph:

Dulia = honor given to the saints, through whom we make requests (praying) but do not worship :marseypraying:

This has been Christian practice since at minimum the Council of Ephesus (431) and arguably earlier as Marian artwork and prayers have been found in the catacombs and amongst all of the earliest liturgical settings. !Catholics !Christians you can disagree but that's how we classify things to see it as not being idolatry.

Thanks man, I have been trying to find what it was for a while. I stumbled upon the article on Wikipedia a few months ago and was reminded of the concept when it was originally taught to me as a child but then I could never remember the name of the article later on.
