I thought that Gypsy was generally more often used for the nomads of Northern and Western Europe, while Roma was for Eastern and Southern. I could be wrong but I was told this by a European I knew, so maybe not but I don't have reason not to believe him. I do know that they are highly derisive and calling them all the same name is like calling middle easterners Arabs.
