>Ireland isn't a tax haven

:#marseyxd:

Ireland is hardly the BVI but we opposed the ruling that made Apple pay us billions in tax, come on.

The whole thing was a punishment for Apple for dodging their heavy taxes and for Ireland for letting Apple do it. Amerimutts thought it was some kind of big win for Ireland but the Micks know where their money and jobs come from.

They're the reason Canada become a nation lmao 🤣

The Fenian Brotherhood were pillaging the Canadian countryside to draw Imperial British troops away from Europe to put them down, creating a lull to forment the Young Ireland revolt. It failed but the raiding campaign and poor British troop performance forced the Canadians to form citizen militias to finally route the Irish Fenians after news of the failed revolt in Ireland forced to withdraw back to America.

That time during the British wars against the Boer Republics, Irish gigachuds flocked to form Irish Volunteer brigades to fight the British since the South African Boers promised their gold and support for a new war of independence in Ireland

They were instrumental in spreading various forms of Christian philosophy and preserving manuscripts during the dark ages. Since then their main claim to fame has been changing the trajectory of nations through the sheer number of people they exported. That and Guiness.

*And in fairness, Northern Ireland isn't really about religion. It's an ethnic conflict that just happens to divide by religious lines.

Yeah lots of people (even in Ireland) miss this. Prods and Taigs fought hand in hand on a number of occasions like the 1798 rebellion. A lot of the figures who are lauded in Irish republicanism like Wolfe Tone and Sam Maguire were prods.

Sure but that's the origin of the modern conflict, just like how Kurds used to be massive Turk peepee riders under the Ottomans to the point of being a major part of the Armenian Genocide

Ronnie Bunting was a founder of the INLA in the 1970s and he had about as prod a background as you can get lmao. The Troubles was always along ethnonationalist rather than religious lines.

So how does there being a Prod Nat make it not a religious conflict but still an ethnonationalist one? :marseyconfused:

Jump in the discussion.

Neighbor if it was a religious conflict why would Catholics found a paramilitary with a Prod? :marseyxd:

Religion was a shorthand but not the be-all-end-all of who was on what side. Sometimes the Catholicussy was too good and Prods would end up fighting for Irish nationalism, like that one UVF commander's son did. RUC + British Army had Catholics too.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Then how was it an ethnic conflict if there was a Catholic paramilitary founded by a Prod? :marseyconfused2:

The "ethnic" lines were inherently sectarian in nature irregardless of religiosity so I don't understand what you mean :marseysad: by how there being a Prod founder among one of the biggest Catholic paramilitaries disproves it being not only religious but also ethnonationalist since said paramilitary would be "compromised" on both accounts not just religious.

Ethnic? Arent they all Irish? Are you being for real?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. The Protestants were imported from Scotland by the English to push out the native Irish and take over their lands as new citizens loyal to the crown. That's the root of the conflict in its simplest form. Look up Ulster Plantation

I promise you nobody in Ireland has ever bombed anyone over transubstantiation.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. They both speak forms of Gaelic and were part of the Celtic fringe but were fundamentally different tribal groups and peoples since always. The material point is that the Scots were outsiders offered the land of the native populace and placed above them, breeding resentment and anger we deal with up to today.

I dont know about literally every place, they took over a lot. But all the ones I do know about that happened to. They'd take over an area, make the people submit to them, then grab a minority group that was extremely similar to the original group and install them as colonial govt as a way of showing "cooperation" with the locals. In turn, the local majority population would grow to resent the minority ruling population instead of yhe british, because the minorities would suddenly have power in a way they never had before and they'll start taking revenge for all the things the majority had done to them.

The periphery of the Celtic world that used to encompass lots of Europe. Scotland, Cornwall, Ireland, Isle of Man, Galicia (arguably) etc.

Literally the fringes of former Celtic territory that's now the only place you'll find remnants of the language etc

Ireland itself wasnt ever truly unified during the Ancient or Middle Ages, let alone unified with Scotland. Tribes and petty kings or chieftains may have formed alliances with Celtic cousins to bust some Roman skulls, but that's not the same as being one people.
