I dont know about literally every place, they took over a lot. But all the ones I do know about that happened to. They'd take over an area, make the people submit to them, then grab a minority group that was extremely similar to the original group and install them as colonial govt as a way of showing "cooperation" with the locals. In turn, the local majority population would grow to resent the minority ruling population instead of yhe british, because the minorities would suddenly have power in a way they never had before and they'll start taking revenge for all the things the majority had done to them.
