Horror is one of my favorite genres but it's hard to find good reads outside of like Stephen King's coke-era classics. I liked Heart Shape Box by Joe Hill but that's Stephen King's son so it's not exactly expanding horizons.

Regardless of literary criticism, it’s fair to say King had the biggest pop culture impact among American writers post 1950s. So many great adaptations and parodies. It will be hard to find another with the same impact after he’s gone.
