Hot Takes/Unpopular opinions

There is always something we disagree with the majority. So here’s a thread to talk about it.

Mine is this: :marsey1984: is an overrated, over quoted above average book, not bad, but far from being a masterpiece. Animal farm is Orwell’s best work of fiction and Brave New World is a much superior and plausible dystopia. 1984 style oppression is just hyperbole.

YA can genuinely (albeit rarely) be good reading for adults- for example, the abhorsen series

Blood Meridian is almost unreadable. It did one thing incredibly well, and that was building a bleak, depressing, near unlivable world where nothing good ever happens. The actual story is overlong and boring.

1984 is a worse version of a brave new world

It’s funny to compare the different flavors of dictatorships

Oceania was a nightmarish shithole, basically a somehow even worse version of Stalinist Russia.

The World State in BNW reminded me of the “we’re le good guys” type of libs who’ll curtail all civil liberties while claiming is for your own good, just shut up and consoom (a.k.a. soma).

Moby Peepee is just a book about an exciting tale of a big whale and nothing else.

No, it is actually a gay romance between a 1840s sperg and a big Māori inside a ship with a schizo captain, the big whale is just in the background. Melville was a based bussy Connaisseur :marseychefkiss::marseyhomofascist:

It could be about characters too. Here’s one from “the Great Gatsby”

Tom wasn’t a bad guy. He was a proto poltard :chudsmug: but so were many upper class burgers back then (pseudoscientific racist bullshit was fashionable then). His actions towards Gatsby are reasonable, no way anyone would act politely towards a strange weird guy giving lavish parties simping for your wife. He cucked Daisy and Daisy cuked him, definitely made for each other.

Great Gatsby is Titanic for men but vaguely disguised as a piece about high society of the time

I always loved how poetic he made the act of calling them shitty people

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...

I can think of so many people that could be described this way nowadays :marseynoooticer:

Such a great quote. They remind me of Alec Baldwin and other modern celebs.

Nick was kind of weird in respect to Gatsby though, his narration was almost an Hagiography.

I don't think 1984 is meant to be taken literally, or at least I never perceived it as an 'accurate' description of an oppressive authoritarian state. It's more of an exploration as to why we would want to avoid it

I don't have any hot takes myself because I am uneducated pig and should read more. I've bought myself Dostoevsky's Idiot a year ago and still haven't touched it cause I couldn't find the time (this is a cope btw)
