Weekly “what are you reading” thread # 12 :marseyreading: . NON BOOK CLUB RELATED ONLY

As you well know, we are reading the first 7 chapters of The Master and Margarita in our recently created book club.

However the Friday threads are for non book club readings only, we’ll reserve “The Master and Margarita” discussions for Sundays.

I finished Lolita earlier this week. Humbert and Quilty chapter was basically :marseynoyou:. I’m glad both of them died, after finishing I went back to the prologue to realize Dolores was “Mrs Schiller” who died at childbirth :marseysad::marseyrain:

This book had a hard to swallow plot, and Nobokov managed to write an engaging story with it, he said he based Humbert Humbert on Lewis Carroll, probably because of his writing style but the funny thing is Carroll was probably a closeted :marseypedo:.

But I have to say that among Nabokov’s works, I preferred “Pale Fire” to “Lolita”.

I really enjoyed Into Thin Air, learned a lot about Everest by watching the IMAX film and reading that book, it was interesting to see how the two groups interacted

yeah, probably one of my favorite books i've read this year. will be buying and subsequently reading into the wild after my backlog is smaller. a friend recommended endurance about the 1914 antarctic expedition based on into thin air and will be checking that out too

Finished it last week, I feel like it had the same problems as Spring Snow, in that it took a long time to really get going. Once the league started up and especially once they got raided, I though it was as good as I had hoped/expected. Just started Temple of Dawn and 40 pages in, it certainly is more attention grabbing

nice, i'm looking forward to it. spring snow was good and only got better towards the end, so hoping runaway horses is that quality

It's pretty fun to read, partly because they're nice stories and partly because sometimes the characters have a heated g*mer moment. They do start to feel samey after a while tho.

Finished My Disillusionment in Russia/My Further Disillusionment in Russia. Ngl after the first half anything she says gets pretty repetitive :marseytabletired2:

Ordered T.E. Lawrence's 7 Pillars of Wisdom :marseyexcited: not sure if I'll read it right away though.

I aint touching lolita because of the association, but the constant praise he gets makes me contemplative of pale fire. Sell me on it.

The libertarian in Lolita is pretty much a psychopath, I never thought of him as a sympathetic character at all. Pale Fire is basically about a schizo stalker writing a “commentary” on a dead poet’s poem. He was the poet’s Neighbor and was obsessed with him and he tells his own bullshit story throughout the commentary. The Poem is part of the novel as well.

Just read Stardust by Neil Gaiman. An enjoyable modern take on proto-fantasy fiction, though I found it a bit too short to really get into the romance plot. But concise writing does help feed the fairy story atmosphere.

After reading it, I found out that it was originally published in a heavily illustrated format. The version I read was text only. I wonder how that affects the overall experience. I didn't really feel like it was missing anything, but maybe the illustration balanced out the "short" feeling.

i just read blood meridian which i read about a decade ago, holds up

if youre a fan of nabokov his "lectures on literature" are worth checking out, hes mostly spot on, in my opinion, and i agree with everything he says except hes way more explicitly misogynistic to women authors than i am, its funny the lectures were at a womens college tho, mans telling a sea of women faces that women cant write
