In the 1930s, the book was not published until the 1960s and the first edition was heavily censored by the Soviet Government. The uncensored version came later. The author Mikhail Bulgakov was a White Army sympathizer whom Stalin was strangely fond of. Stalin loved his plays but censored some of his work and didn’t purge him.
