Yes, it's an absolute masterpiece but Paul Kennedy's magnum opus is The Rise and Fall of Great Powers. It's around 1000 pages, covers everything from the fall of the Roman Empire to the rise of the Habsburg Empire all the way to the mid 20th crumbling of the British Empire. This you can say is a magnification of one of the footnotes of that book. It's a fun read but you'll miss out a lot of wink wink nudge nudge from the author.
Imperial Obituary is another good book on the topic by Major General Richard Hilton. He was part of the general staff of British Palestine so he CHUDS OUT about the decline of British hegemony to American influence
