The purpose of naval bases is not any nonsense like projecting power. It is to lower the bar of willingness of a democratic government to go to war

Same with military bases in places like Estonia.

Estonia literally asked to be British dominon as it was regaining independence. British admiral who was commanding Royal Navy fighting against the commies in the Baltic at the time had to politely refuse extending His Majesty's lands by one more sh*thole.
