What's an approachable way to start reading philosophy?

Should I just go chronologically, for instance: Aristotle -> Descartes-> Kant -> Schopenhauer or something like that, or go some other way like reading secondary authors' summaries of works and views of said philosophers first?

I'm not interested in any single philosophical movement or ideology, but in terms of topics I'd like to read on epistemology and metaphysics.

I was really hoping some people read here and would give recommendations, instead I've fallen for a bait hole completely exposing my straggy interests for everyone to see and laugh at.

That's it, I'm gonna do it :marseycontemplatesuicide:

Try "think: a compelling introduction to philosophy" by Simon blackwell

Start with Nihilism because it's works are very direct and you'll either love it (rope if this is the case) or be disgusted with it in a specific way that'll breadcrumb your way to criticisms from other schools of thought. Put off self described political philosophy as long as possible for obvious reasons.

This is a lecture series that I liked a lot. It's about the major philosophers of the western world. It's really approachable for people who haven't done any philosophy before.

After I watched that series, I was able to find authors whose ideas I found particularly interesting: Nietzsche, Stirner, Wittgenstein, Quine, etc. That said, I'm sure you'll find other people of interest. Philosophy runs the gamot from applied math to what is basically theology, so don't worry if you don't read everything.

First you'll need to dye your hair green and cut your peepee off.

Then read Plato, read Descartes, and optionally read Kuhn so you can dunk on all the science worshiping bitches.

Don't read Hegel, he's shit, in my family we have a saying "Ta gueule, Hegel", it rhymes in French.

Also don't read anything past the 18th century really. Philosophy was solved by then.

I don't think Plato or Descartes chopped off their peepees though, any way to skip over that part?

Start with Plato's Republic and then read Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra. Plato is foundational to western philosophy and Nietzsche invalidated most philosophers so that's a good way to dive into philosophy.

Use this as a reference, it's an incredible good resource for putting things into a digestible form. Only actual academics are allowed to contribute or alter it and has to pass a board. It's wikipedia for philosophy but good.

Platonic dialogues should go:

Gorgias—Meno—Republic—Apology

Then for Aristotle

Ethics—Physics—Metaphysics if you want— De Anima if you want

Then read Old Testament some, New Testament Gospel and Romans/Acts

Then Augustine—Anselm

Then go in to Descartes and the rest of Modern philosophy in what order you'd like.

Really all it is is reading and fully comprehending Aristotle and you're mostly good

Read the book The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. After that read his History of Western Philosophy. I would recommend that over reading any primary sources at first.

You read that Oxford classics book on the presocratics/sophists then you read Plato. Order of Plato doesn't matter much if you're willing to go back and reread important stuff. If you want an order spoonfed to you I will shill this guy https://www.plato-dialogues.org/tetralog.htm

After Plato and the imporant presocratics you read whatever you want as long as you put in some effort to know what you need to know beforehand (i.e. you would do well to read Aristotle before Leibniz. This is information you can find online very easily or ask /lit/)
