Hey, so due to different circumstances I've found myself with no friends for some time now. I still adore writing. But I'm concerned my dialogue and friendships might come across as forced or artificial. Also, I'm including a relationship and it's been a long time since I've been in one myself. On the other hand, a lot of writers who lacked friends were very much capable of writing lively dialogue and friendship/ relationship into their books.
I come to /r/writing to laugh at them, not to feel bad.
As usual, /r/writing responds at an extreme surface level. Yes, OP can write during a period of social isolation, and they might even create something good. But lack of social experience is certainly an artistic handicap, and the last thing they need is to be told "not everyone has friends, just read books and you'll be okay."
But of course, that's exactly what their fellow !writecel s tell them.
I've literally never had consensual s*x and my A03 account is teeming with it. We live in a time when you can watch pretty much any kind of interaction on youtube or, yknow other websites, and get a feel for what seems natural and what doesn't.

?!
To be a good writer you need to write. You need to write a lot. If you want examples of human interactions you should read books.
You don't need friends, plants, or even a dog to be a good writer.
Though plants and dogs are certainly beneficial.
Just a sheer inversion of reality. Yes, having friends (or any other real life experience) will help you with writing. OP is suffering and this responds with feigned incredulity that they might think their suffering is hurting them!
This is either advanced toxic positivity...
Or else another friendless shut-in coping
I think it's not so much about having friends as being perceptive and observant about what friendships (and other relationships) are and how they function.
if you're good at paying attention and connecting that to a theory of mind about how and why people go about their business of peopling then you can spoof just about anything you witness in the world.

(wait that's us too)
Writing is a solitary endeavor. You don't need anything but your own wits and skills to write. I've had no friends pretty much my entire life, and that has never stopped me, but then I have always spent a lot of time in my own imagination creating stories to fill in those times when I was alone and had no friends. Writing relationships or friendship and dialogue in a story is no different than a man writing a female character or writing about any subject you don't know about. If you don't know how to write it, research it.
This is who's giving you writing advice online.
You don't need personal experience to write. You need to read books to see how relationships are written and how dialogue is written. Reading books gives you examples on how writing and scenes work, how to word things to get your point across.
Writing from actual experience and feeling, instead of just a hodgepodge of everything you've ever read, is what makes a writer unique and human (at least until they put the chatbots in actual robot bodies ).
I mean it might not affect your writing but having friends will help a lot in life so I'd highly recommend having some, even if it's only a few!
It helps to write from experience. It sounds like you're not so much worried about how this will affect your writing as how it's affecting you on a human level. Take yourself on artist dates. Go out to places and events you want to see, join some meetup groups in your interests (I guarantee you've got a writing group or two, at least a book club, near you). Above all, know that solitude is a good thing and important to your understanding of yourself, but building a social life--while energy intensive--is just as important.
Go make some friends.
Fortunately someone provided actual advice. "Just make friends" may not be easy, but it's easier than a life of being an /r/writing user (and it's likelier than getting traditionally published ).

Reminds me of Hayao Miyazaki's "!Anime was a mistake." What he actually said was:
Anime is garbage because it's made by people whose life and relationship with reality is entirely based on anime. /r/writing's books are garbage because they're written by people whose life and relationship with reality is entirely based on whatever books they've read. A copy of a copy, degenerating further with each link in the chain.
As an aside, it's pretty funny that despite telling OP all he needs to do is read, not one of them noticed they're basically advising him to be Matt Damon at the start of Good Will Hunting, pre-Robin Williams pointing out what an idiot he is. /r/writing is reading the wrong fricking books and watching the wrong fricking !kino.
!bookworms, if you want a story that takes the idea of "personal isolation" to the absolute extreme, check out Robert A. Heinlein's "'—All You Zombies—'". The Spierig Brothers adapted it into a film with Ethan Hawke, but you can skip that. They totally missed the point of the story.

MIYAZAKI IS LITERALLY A COPING WHO'S MAD BECAUSE THE FAD OF HIS PRETENTIOUS SLICE IF LIFE MOE MOVIES DIED OFF AND HE CAN HOLY PUSH PRODUCT ON CLOUT ALONE. IT'S FUNNY THIS INSECTOID BUGMAN DERIVATIVE IS CRITIQUING "HUMAN" OBSERVATION WHEN HE'S FURTHER REMOVED FROM WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN THE WEST THAN MOST MODERN JAPS. MOST OF HIS MOVIES CONSTIST OF BUGLIKE CHARACTERS DEVOID OF HUMAN EMOTIONS AND IF THEY'RE NOT THEY ALWAYS HAVE THEM THROUGH THE JAPANESE INSECTOID FILTER OF A CREATURE JUST BARELY UNDERSTANDING HUMAN EMOTION, AND ALWAYS WITH BUGMAN CAVEATS LIKE "EMPATHY IS ILLOGICAL" 🐜 THIS NEIGHBOR HAS NO ROOM TO SPEAK AT ALL, HE WILL NEVER BE TOLKIEN, HE WILL NEVER BE ROWLING, HE WILL NEVER BE GEORGE LUCAS, HECK FRICKER IS BARELY KEEPING PACE WITH martin...

Have you seen the working conditions tho? Animators literally live IN THE OFFICE sometimes because of crunch time.
I know, the authors are awful for most works because they have no life. Theres a reason why good shows are few and far between. Its the same for Hollywood, the writers live in one of the biggest cities in the world with a ton of crazy shit everywhere around them, but they have never lived it. Its fine if you dont want to engage, but dont expect to entertain when your life is boring af.

I don't even think you need friends, you just need to do things with people. The guy you work with could be an absolute lolcow that you despise, but he can serve as great fodder for a character in a story.
The problem is these people are NEETs or working lonely jobs, not that they don't have friends.

You don't need friends to be a good writer but you need at least to interact with people lol, otherwise your characters will always sound uncanny.

Yeah everyone interacts with people. Im sure there have been some writers who are socially inept losers.

Many of them, Proust and Kafka come to mind, however both of them were acute social observers which is what made their books so good. Kafka is a special case because other people found him charming, but he had tons of self-esteem issues and saw himself as an undesirable loser.

The tortured artist, producing works off greatness.
Amusingly, they need that dourness to churn out great works. Even to Ann obsessive degree like Vincent van Gogh. Heck. Even Adam Smith is one of them, but mostly for his (most likely) autism. He was fervently conversing with a friend along a raised walkway and accidentally fell into a tanner's pit.
Murray Rothbard comes to mind. "Anger is my Muse." To be wholly and constantly consumed by an idea or framework for viewing society seems to be a common trait.
!bookworms, what do y'all think?

We're very aware that the female-dating-strategy subreddit is operated for the purpose of misinformation, cult-like indoctrination, promoting dysfunction and hatred and negative emotions.
There's an extremely excellent reason (backed up by hours of discussion, ten-thousand-word essays no one outside our mod team will ever read, and theory literature digging and reaching out to experts) why AHS does not put the words "incel" and "women" into the same noun phrase the way that you did in your comment here:
It's because one of the major methods of bad faith apologetics for hate movements is the Tu Quoque: "They're just as bad".
But -- importantly -- the female-dating-strategy is not:
Importantly, there are no mass murders committed by FDS adherents. There are no restraining orders that we're aware of that cite the FDS subreddit. There are no men on Twitter stepping forward to say that members of the FDS movement are bombarding them with unwelcome tweets and direct messages, sexual advances, and photoshopping pornography of them.
In fact we cannot find any credible evidence that there are any groups of powerful women who take over institutions of power to leverage oppression of men as a whole class.
So calling them anything like "incels" is comparing sour apples to radium poisoning.
